[X230] Magnesium body repair

I have an X230 I bought off Ebay back in 2020/2021 which was working fine till recently. However the dusty environment in India has taken a toll on it's cooling and I now need to take it apart, and clean and re-paste the heat-sink. While it's all taken apart, I would like to fix the broken corners o...

Re: T420 always trottled to minimum

well good luck with that. Just telling you it will be at least with a few of these battery packs before you can get all the experience you need and build a battery that is 100% safe. I hope you have a spot welder and good quality battery cells as for your first experiment you really have no room fo...

Re: T420 always trottled to minimum

Question: does your T420 have a dead or missing main battery and a 65 watt charger? Dead Battery, 90W power brick. I've also had ThinkPads that react unpredictablely if the battery is like very dead. I had a ThinkPad T60 that would randomly freeze because the power management triggered protection w...

T420 always trottled to minimum

I've had an old BIOS locked T420 with an i5-2520M (off of ebay) that the kids were using for their virtual classes, off a 90W Power supply. Last year it's battery died, and last month it's CMOS battery died, so the BIOS setting got reset to their defaults. When I opened it to replace the CR2032 in i...

Re: [X230]Keyboard Cleanup and Chassis/Lid Repairs

Before I start, let me describe the lid, to explain my labeling: The clamshell lid is made up of a large metal rectangle on top of which a narrow plastic rectangle is attached. The plastic rectangle contains all the antennae, which would work much worse if the complete lid was metal. The plastic is ...

As and when you get to any of the Thinkpad batteries, can I request you to document the opening of the battery pack, if you manage to do it non-destructively?

I can try and give you pics of the the 44+ that I opened, destructively, if you think that'll help with opening the battery packs.

Lenovo US 4th Quarter sale

Lenovo US is running quite a nice sale, especially if you're a T480 owner: I just got a replacement keyboard for myself for 18 USD, The Ultradock is at 40 USD (just the dock, no power supply) and I'm tempted to buy it just at it's low price, but I'd see no use on it, so... [X230]Battery recalibration weirdness

Hi all, My X230 has been behaving itself pretty well since I got it mid 2019 (secondhand in india, from a bulk secondhand vendor). It's been my daily driver for work, and has been behaving itself pretty well, except for an issue last year where it's screen (which I had replaced when I got it to a tf...

[WTB] Physically broken but electrically OK KB

I'm looking to cannibalize the trackpoint components out of a ThinkPad Keyboard into my own small DIY travel KB, to get rid of the mouse from my travel kit. Anyone have a keyboard that's physically broken, but electrically OK that I can buy off them (or pay for shipping, for your generous giveaway)?

I will advice against buying a slice battery now. As of now, any slice you buy will be 10 years old or more, and will no...

When I got my first x230, I went ahead and replaced its LCD (model no. LP125WH2-SLB3 ) with a better one as listed by RBS here . The old panel has been lying around unused since then. Recently I ended up looking for way to make a cheap HDMI display from it(for a portable RasPi cluster), so I thought...

As luck would have it, I just received a pair of dead Lenovo 44+s with the express purpose of opening one to replace the cells : one to destructively open to learn the process, and another one to actually open in a manner that doesn't damage it, after learning from the first one. I see you have accumulated atleast 2 of the 4 cell batteries. Can you take one apart and re-cell it and then start up the battery (there seems to be some short-curcuit like trick to resetting the fail switch on the battery controller board)? If one works, then you're good to re-cell the others corre...

would you liveboot off a Linux USB and check what output `tlp-stat -b` gives? From a investigative perspective, I find that linux, given it's background, is usually the best option to dig into such issues.

The damage looks like the one on my X220. :( Tried cyanoacrylate, and it broke too. Might try cyanoacrylate + baking soda when I find the time. I have 2 X230s (my daily driver, which is a year old, and a 2nd one I got off EBAY pretty cheap, but with breaks in the body and lid), and both suffer from a weird issue in the keyboard bezel near the VGA port, right next to the FN key. Given how easy it is to switch disks in the x230, I suggest you get yourself 3 inexpensive SSDs, one each for linux, win7 and win10. Pop in the one you want to boot from. It is a bit more cumbersome as compared to a boot menu with multiple boot options, but it's a lot less headache in terms of insta...

Same for me, I prefer smoothness and less laptop weight then battery power-up time. I'm also running SSD (as on all my laptops including the X61f), but two memory modules (16GB total) and Core i7 and I'd rather stick to standard 65W charger with 3-pole plug. It's still lighter then the 90W or 135W ...
