the firegl uses the same chipset as the 9600. They are exactly the same except for the RAM. The difference is in the driver. The firegl drivers are designed for stability as the 9600 drivers are designed for performance.

this is strange. My first guess is, you have a defected pixel. not a dead pixel, not a color pixel. The pixel seems to work since it changes colors.
