Processor Speed Discussion

Seems like folks are unloading lots of good stuff during these trying times, and "slightly used" laptops are cheap and abound everywhere. I was able to pick up a Lenovo Ideapad Flex 4-1470 for pennies, it's light and fast enough for basic tasks like e-mail, web surfing and word processing, and has a...

WTS: X220/X220i Mainboard FRU 04W3276 i5-2520M

Bought this to upgrade my X220 I3-2310, but several of the ribbon connectors were in a different position, and unreachable by the ribbon cables. I needed (and obtained and installed) an FRU 04W0676 so this is surplus to my needs and might help somebody else. Even if my X220i died due to the mainboar...

T420 BIOS Headscratcher

So I was looking at going to the modified BIOS for my T420, and I checked my installed version. I have version 1.30 of 6/16/11 (83ET60WW) and the modified BIOS routine tells you first to flash to the latest Lenovo BIOS, version 1.41 (8CUJ20US). The trouble is that I go to Lenovo's support section fo...

Am always amazed at these sort of threads. I have Win10 running on 9 PC's at home and at work and have had zero issues. Upgrades? Nary a hiccup besides rebooting when they've installed at their own leisure. Must be good karma.

There are a LOT of older COBOL business systems still running, and our State accounting system still uses a front-end emulator to a IBM terminal 3270 system. Yikes. Hey, I did some FORTRAN, dabbled in PASCAL, and now am lucky if I can crayon....

I set the BIOS "display" to <Digital+dock1> (think that's what it said) for startup and on the 3rd reboot it worked. Huh. Now if the laptop isn't on the dock, will it default to the laptop native display?

Just picked up 2 4337 docks to use with my T420 in several locations, and neither seems to display a video signal out of the DP to a monitor, even if the laptop is set to use only the outboard monitor. I'm using a 95W Lenovo power brick to the dock. Is there a BIOS setting I need to change or anythi...

What is the Magic Key Snap-on?

One of the key caps on my X220i (left CTRL) popped off when I was pushing on the keyboard to remove it. What's the magic method of re-attaching the key-cap? Just pressing down firmly doesn't do it. Do those two small tabs along the top go into the holes on they key hinge thing?

Well, regardless, I love this T420. The size is right, the heft is right, the keyboard is perfect, the screen is great ... maybe some upgrades inline. Another SSD to store files and programs off the eSATA M2 drive, more RAM, perhaps one day a faster CPU (it has i5-2540M). Back in the day whomever CT...

A Question on Models and Versions

So I have found recently that two of my Thinkpad's, including this new-to-me T420, aren't listed in the model series on ThinkWiki's Hardware Specifications (https://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Hardware_Specifications). Are those lists all-inclusive, or do I have Canadian models or something else not list...

Re: Talk about lousy postal services

Those USPS status messages aren't always accurate. I've had packages delivered the same day that a status message indicates it is a thousand miles away. And two similar packages mailed a day apart from the same location can take wildly different amounts of time to make the transit. It was hit or mis...

Well, silly me but the way to make a X120e faster is to retrograde it. My 16GB model runs Win10 and is a pig. I retrograded my ZorinOS version with a different SSD and put Win7 on it, and it's much faster than the other one, even at just 8GB. I always liked Win7 and never had an issue with it. Heck,...

I have a bunch of old ThinkPad keyboards which I want to give away to somebody who will actually put them to use.
Are these the old-style click-keys, not the newer chicklet-style? I could use one and would spring for shipping just to have extra key caps as spares for like an X220i.

But available light is poor with this camera. Are you just being backlit by a window or something? Even my outboard Logitech C270 webcam has issues with that, and the only fix is to close the blinds and turn up the room lighting. An additional room lamp might be a cheaper and more effective alterna...

Is the CR2032 backup battery in the T430s replaceable inside that connector, or is the entire part molded in and need to be sourced?
