Re: The official 770 Upgrade and general information Topic

I have completed further preventative work on this 770Z so to help others, I'll add a few more notes. I am not going into all the details of the teardown but it's fairly straightforward. The best advice is to have plenty of space and lay each removed item or set of screws out in order which you foll...

Re: The official 770 Upgrade and general information Topic

A fresh contibution... Received this ‘non booting’ IBM Thinkpad 770Z this week – the last and highest specification 7XX series thinkpad. A true monster, which feels like it’s made of solid metal and certainly 770-series machines seem to suffer from ‘chipping’ or wearing out of the surface coating of...

IBM Thinkpad 535X Teardown and Repair

Hi I've done a bunch of these. I never have the patience to document it but thought I'd give it a try this time. Notes 535X is the one you want. Always TFT screen, USB port, no corrosive battery inside, fanless and, obviously, highest spec. The 535E has a fan, whereas the 535X doesn’t have a fan The...

Re: Internet Speed Test, who can you believe?

Making up a fibre optic patch cable from scratch, including terminating both ends is far simpler with copper. I woudn't even know where to start with building my own fibre optic patch cable.

Re: Internet Speed Test, who can you believe?

I'm in telecoms now and copper is cheaper, easier to terminate, less problem if there is a break or fault, easier to work with, more commonly understood and meets the technical requirement of the service I'm paying for.

385 obscurity

Possibly one of the least interesting semi-rarity Thinkpads is the 385 series. A 380 only slightly different. Like a different badge or a bigger hard drive. Anyway, does anyone know all the 385 models? I have a 385XD and 385CD. I can't find any online specification for the 385CD. It's almost like it...

Re: IBM ThinkPad 380Z

Probably depends more on the OS you have than the type of USB port you have. In summary:

A gamepad that supports USB 1.0 and the operating system you have, will work.

Re: Internet Speed Test, who can you believe?

1Gbps copper is the same as 1Gbps fibre. I pay for 1Gbps.

I suspect the last 30 metres are copper due to the sharp turns around walls and around corners.

Re: Internet Speed Test, who can you believe?

Here in Milton Keynes, we don't even need a router. Just a 1Gbps copper ethernet RJ45 dropped into our house. The engineer didn't know what he was doing so I blagged the combination to the cabinet and patched mine in myself - it's just a cisco switch patched out for every house in the street (there ...

Re: IBM ThinkPad 560x HHD issue

If you have another thinkpad of the same era, with a FDD, then it might work to rebuild the MBR/paritions on that but anyhting else is just chance. Mostly, I've found it won't work. I would suck it up and get an IBM FDD as you can use it on virtually all thinkpads of that era. Really a working FDD i...

Re: IBM Thinkpad 755CE + MASSIVE dock

I've been fighting with this dock today and ran out of time. It's clear that something else is required if you want to attach a 701c to it - the connector is just too far away from where the back of the 701c would be. Plus there is this movable 'claw' inside and I have no idea what it does. It can't...

Re: IBM ThinkPad 560x HHD issue

You need one of these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/225776086808 I doubt the 560X will boot from anything else (easily). Maybe PCMCIA or a dock. I wouldn't assume a SATA to IDE adaptor will work and also will it fit in the drive bay? If I were you, I'd pick up a cheap 2.5" drive from ebay or aliexpres...

Re: The official 770 Upgrade and general information Topic

Good work, how are your palmrests holding up? Most of them seem to wear through to the bare metal, especially on the right side. I've read a few people say how difficult these are to work on but I didn't think that. The boot process is a bit weird if you have a dead clock battery. Basically you can'...

Re: IBM Thinkpad 755CE + MASSIVE dock

Yeah, it doesn't seem to mention the need for any kind of adaptor.

I was wondering what the whole up/down 'claw' mechanism was but I didn't mention it because I assumed it was something obvious I just hadn't read the notes close enough to realise what it was...

I worry that the mood might turn ugly if/when I find that 701 docking kit, though...
I originally had the same thought but having skimmed that japanese page, it kinda look like he didn't need one. I have a 701c nearby so when it's back together, I'll have a look how it might go together....

Re: IBM Thinkpad 755CE + MASSIVE dock

Is this to the left of the 75x docking connector? If so it's probably for the 701 adapter kit for the Dock II, since the 701 has a different docking connector and it's on the left rear of the case. I know I have one of these kits up in the attic but haven't seen it yet  I vaguely recall you h...

Re: IBM Thinkpad 700C

Just a minor update.

I did lots of swinging and the 700C drive spins but doesn't read.

I found a WD-280 on the shelf but it's 1/3rd thicker than the drive sled that goes into the 700C.

So, not a lot of progress...

I think you'll struggle with that, as PCMCIA slots were only introduced with the 720, weren't they? :) Yes, I did realise, last week. N33sx, N51sx/slc, and CL57sx would probably have used the same basic ESDI drives, albeit permanently mounted rather than in removable cradles. Both the N51 and CL57 ...

Re: IBM Thinkpad 755CE + MASSIVE dock

I'd parked this dock for a month but had tested it and found out the CD-ROM drive didn't seem to work, so upon seeing the dock boot and scan a SCSI bus, assumed it was a SCSI CD-ROM. So I bought a period-correct IBM (blue button) SCSI CD-ROM and then set about restoring it only to discover the CD-RO...

Re: TPs looking for new homes

Ok, I stand corrected. We all have to be careful and the 1 post, no response, nobody knowing the name thing is often a red flag.

FYI, the 701c has become rather collectible, even in non-working condition. If they're aethetically nice, don't undersell yourself!
