Thinkpad 350 (PS/Note) machine hinges
Hi <i've considered image sizes before posting this, so I hope it doesn't rattle anyone's cage that they're 'too big'. Maybe on a Thinkpad 755CX.... but they're tiny on my machine> I'm attempting to restore a 350 which has the notorious design flaw of many early notebook iterations of thinkpads whic...

WTB: Anyone have X30/X31/X32 palmrest plastic / keyboard surround?
Hi
I have two X31s but both have damaged palmrests. If anyone has a clean example, please let me know? I am in the UK by the way.
Thanks

I've found anything with any kind of detergent or soap in it on the slightly sticky rubber makes it worse.... hard plastic, the opposite!

Where did you get the image from? I posted up my image on archive.org about a year ago and it's been proven to work on a variety of media restores....

Re: 600 Series top cover clean and refresh (Eraser vs face cream vs polish)
I've done loads of 600 lids and each one is different. Some are just dirty and haven't succumed to the rot that seems to happen to most of them where the rubber coating goes moist and sticky. This is irreversible. If it hasn't happened yet, I would suggest cleaning with water spray and a soft cloth,...

Re: Does the 755CD have a detachable onboard memory board like the 755CX?
Thanks, my guess is that they are the same, but wondering why I hadn't attempted this repair in the past, as I have all the known good spares to make it happen. My recent experience with a 390X being so subtly different to a 390E that it completed wasted 3 hours work has left me sceptical about futu...

Hi Thanks, maybe you could just add this edit to the TFT panels page? Row 9, for: 12.1 1024x768 105,8 760E, 760ED, 760XD, 860, i Series 1620 The panel is IBM branded with 2 part numbers: 82H5250 / 82h5226 Just thought it would be useful in the future to someone restoring this one, as I immediately f...

Thinkwiki TFT panels page
Hi I use https://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/TFT_display as a great source of info on LCD panels. However I notice there are a few gaps and I know what models should be listed but I tried creating a mediawiki account to edit the line but it won't accept my login on the thinkwiki site. Does anyone know if...

390X motherboard doesn't fit 390E case.
Hi Just posting this here for some future weirdo who decides to use a 390E case to rebuild a 390X - it doesn't fit. Everything looks exactly the same but for some weird reason the cut-ins on the left side (audio jack side) are about 3mm different, meaning although everything looks exactly the same, ...

Does the 755CD have a detachable onboard memory board like the 755CX?
Hi All I have a 755CD with an onboard RAM fault. I have a couple of spare 8mb RAM modules (daughterboards) from the onboard memory of 2 x 755CX machines. However this bit is really the last thing you come to when dismantling the entire unit. Before I try, does anyone happen to know if the 755CD has ...

Thanks!

Re: T43p neither trackpoint, nor trackpad work...
Hi The T43 keyboard has the power button as part of the keyboard, which limits some testing. If I unplug the trackpad though, the trackpoint and mouse buttons in the keyboard all work fine. If I plug in a different T43 trackpad it kills both. So basically, if both are connected, neither work. I can'...

T43p neither trackpoint, nor trackpad work...
Hi All I have a T43p 14" with an odd problem. Neither the trackpoint on the keyboard, it's mouse buttons, nor the trackpad and it's mouse buttons work in any OS. I have checked the BIOS and both are set to 'automatic' (It's either Automatic or Disabled as an option). I've tried a different, working,...

Re: T41p - after attempting to replace LCD, no LCD will work!?
Hmmm. Plot thickens. I tried the new panel in a T43p and the same symptoms. I immediately decided the new panel is causing a problem, which when tried more than a few times becomes permanent. I noticed that the original machine - the T41p now will not boot without an external display attached. It so...

T41p - after attempting to replace LCD, no LCD will work!?
Hi All I have a T41p which had a blotchy LCD display. I sourced a new replacement - like for like. Removed the mains power and main battery, and replaced it but the display wouldn't show. I plugged in an external SVGA monitor and it works fine on that. So I switched back to the original blotchy scre...

T43 / P machine differences in palm rests and touchpad/mouse buttons
Hi All I have a couple of T4x machines - They're labelled T41p, T42 and T43p and all of them have a one piece plastic surround around the keyboard and incorporating a palm rest. I have some minor issues I need to deal with but I'm getting a bit confused because a lot of the T4x machines or parts I s...

IBM Thinkpad 235 (Japan Only) Restore Image and notes
Hi Everyone I have 2 x Thinkpad 235 machines - one pretty much factory fresh with Windows 98 and the other a bit more 'weathered' with a faulty HDD. These machines are wonderful little machines - about a third smaller than the 701c and, I think not actually manufactured by IBM, which can be noted by...

570 / 570E BIOS firmware?
I've a bunch of 570 machines and I've noticed that the 570E is an extremely similar machine - notably coming with faster P3 CPUs, 100Mhz bus (over the 570's 66Mhz) and larger RAM capacity. The 570 will show 320Mb RAM on POST but will not boot to an OS. The max it can run seems to be 100 or 133 RAM w...

Re: Tearing hair out - T2x white screens...
Hi I bridged it because I didn't have the capability to replace it and the screen worked fine. I totally agree with never replacing a fuze with a piece of metal as the outcome could be deadly, but in this case, where the fuze it literally 2mm wide, it was either throw the thing in the pin or bridge ...

And bingo - no continuity on it..... It's t-i-n-y though.... how important is it, could I just bridge it with solder?

I do have a pile of T2x machines which work, I'm just hesitant to take another working T2x machine and end up with another one with a white screen due to something I am doing. That was, coincedentally exactly the place I had ended up with, but I've parked it for later today. I know the LCDs work, an...

Re: Tearing hair out - T2x white screens...
I found 3 fuses all check out for continuity. The only thing I can think of is that all the ribbons are brittle and get damaged easily. However they're really sturdy - they're not soft and flexible because they're coated in some kind of tough, but bendy fabric which does seem to protect them very we...

Tearing hair out - T2x white screens...
Hi I've got a T20 and T22 and both are working. The T20 XGA was complete and fully working, but slightly rough case and the T22 SXGA+ was without a working LCD and I decided to use the two to test a load of spare parts to know for sure what was good and what wasn't. I have 5 XGA ribbons, 4 inverters...

So a bit like in science class, a cylinder is much stronger than a cube because it only has two 3 sides and 2 edges, whereas an oblong has 12 corners (edit) and 6 sides?

What causes the rubberised coating to degrade?
Hi Not sure if this has been covered, but what causes the rubberised coating on 60x, T2x, T3x, T4x and similar older thinkpads to go sticky? I have a 600 which is factory fresh, no degredation, I have a 600 which feels very slightly like things stick to it and a 600 which is completely mushy. If the...
