Re: What's inside a ThinkPad 700, et. al., FDD module?

I have both, but why are you trying to? The hard drive isn't IDE in a 700C, it's an ESDI drive because the machine is MCA architecture. btw Imgur doesn't work in the EU/UK. Blocked. Maybe use imgbb or similar? Maybe some wackiness with a FDD ribbon extension out the front of my 755C to connect to a...

Do you mean before slicing, rotate the model on the plate 45 degrees rather than 90 degrees as in the picture?

Re: 700C Rebuild Ideas

I've been trying a few different things (which have often since fallen by the wayside) but now what I'm doing is reinforcing both hinge sides with 2.5mm sheet aluminium (which essentially slides into a rectangular hole, but the final design splits into two versions - one with those slots for metal r...

Ok, I'm nearly there. mouse buttons now fully incorporated and working against the keyboard. There really is 10ths of a mm differences going on here. Re: 700C Rebuild Ideas

Hey. Thanks for sharing, I'll have a look. I'm currently using Tinkercad and getting OK at all the basics but do find some elements a little too simple, so I might take a course in Fusion. I don't know if you can just buy fusion (was fusion 360) or you need to pay through the nose for some subscript...

Re: 700C Rebuild Ideas

We do need a repository - it's getting hard to keep up with it all! I think I can build one. This is absolutely something I can add to the IBM section on my website. Here is something I'll add to when I find things. It's empty right now, but when I get 30 minutes, i'll add all that I have. https://...

Re: 700C Rebuild Ideas

Hey So here is where I'm at. Currently focused on purely the back section, altough the final design will include the whole panel, front and back. I'm almost at 1-1 replica point, and have loosened the hinges back to original specification. This is Mk6 of the design. My focus next is counter sinking ...

Re: 700C Rebuild Ideas

Hi The first thing I've figured out is my back section is actually part of the front section, but snapped on the thin sections right and left. However I've now ordered a Bambu H2D with a bunch of accessories and I'm doing a course in Tinkercad. This should optimise protyping with a fast turnaround. ...

700C Rebuild Ideas

Hi All Everyone who owns a 700C will be acutely aware of the issues with the hinges. I'm trying to come up with a way to resolve these issues and make the 700C stable and usable again. As far as I understand it, there are two issues: 1) The hinges themselves become too stiff 2) The plastic base whic...

Re: ThinkPad 350: hinge and shell repair

Thanks for making the STL for the mounting points. I had them printed in nylon and fitted them into a 2141-182 which has the same design of hinges (well close enough) and lid.... I sanded down the original spaces, cleaned with alcohol and then Araldited the 3D printed bases in place, left it 24 hour...

Re: ThinkPad 350: hinge and shell repair

Ok, so I've attempted to rebuild my lid and for this attempt I'm using Araldite. As you can see I've tried to get the bases back into original positions. I think what I've learned in this test run is to get some kind of malliable putty to 'box in' where the adhesive is going to sit, to contain it to...

Re: ThinkPad 350: hinge and shell repair

Thanks for the links. In the new year I'm going to spend a week trying to make my own replacement bases for the 350 lid and then we'll have an end-to-end solution. I've seen a few types of software to use, but I forget most of them and tinkercad has the most memorable name, so I think I'll start on ...

Re: ThinkPad 350: hinge and shell repair

Ok, this is all great work. I’ve had a chance to do some of my own ground work using ‘panips’ models and I think I have some things to note – some of which overlaps panips’ response to me today! The second solution is a 3D printed clip to replace the spring, which uses friction instead of tension to...

Re: ThinkPad 350: hinge and shell repair

I have had 4 versions of the "Full 3D-Printed Chassis Support Component: Reinforcing or replacing the entire mounting bracket." from PCBway - 2 sets in nylon and 2 sets with an ABS mix to compare. Before I dismantle a 425/350, I'm slightly confused how to apply these L/R pieces - is it re-using the ...

Re: ThinkPad 350: hinge and shell repair

This is absolutely brilliant. I'm going to run off a few prints myself of "Full 3D-Printed Support Component", but I wonder what is the best material if I use PCBway? I often just guess my way through materials on there, but they do offer a huge amount, including blending... Also, have you considere...

Re: 3D printable models for vintage thinkpad repairing

Hi - if you're taking requests, then the small rectangular PCMCIA plastic cover the just clips off and always gets lost on the 755 series.... I think the real issue which could be solved by 3D printing which is the biggest single issue in older thinkpads is by replacing the mounting of where the met...

Re: Very weird thinkpad 600e error

Well, the 770 which is much the same era will not let you boot the machine with a dead CMOS - same manual and locked up screen, and I suspect the 600 is much the same. Did you actually set the time and date to current? It would be a different error, but does the machine have a verified working boot ...

Re: Very weird thinkpad 600e error

Having seen this kind of thing dozens of times my guess is your replacement battery still is not adequately powering the CMOS.

I'd start again with a brand new 2025 battery, connect a fresh set of wires to it and start again.

Re: WTB: ThinkPad 755c and/or 755cd

Hi I managed to find a 486 755CD but it was quite a long time getting one - mainly because I think the P75 was far more popular for coping with the new multimedia era and because with second hand 30 year old ones, it can be quite hard to determine that it's a 486. The 755c is similarly but slightly ...

Re: PCMCIA/CF boot - legacy Thinkpads

Just another update and will update the wiki. The 535E will boot from PCMCIA and the Easy Setup is clever enough to not allow you to enable both the HDD0 and PCMCIA at the same time (presumably as they conflict). It will boot happily from up to a 4Gb CF card but on whatever card you use Win98 fails ...

Re: Classic ThinkPad Device Driver Matrix pages

I find with things like the 530CS, 535 and stuff like the S30 I end up either hoping for the best 'with windows' or cobbling together what I can find using specific general hardware drivers. I also recall the 755 is the biggest nightmare because there are so many different hardware variations, espec...

Re: 770 bad inverter.....why?

Couple of novice questions: 1) Got a link to the exact aliexpress item? 2) Was the driver included? 3) Does the driver have to be wired into the existing inverter feed (I'm assuming it cannot come from the HV inverter +/- 4) (how) Does all this extra circuitry fit inside the lid/bezel? 5) How is dif...

I know, but I just wouldn't bother. What would be the point or the gain? It's just complicating matters by using anything other than CF with PCMCIA.
