Re: WTB: T60 15" 4:3 LCD flex cable

Thanks for suggestion. In fact, there are both 91P6970 and 91P6950 on AliExpress, although I prefer to avoid buying from China and would rather support community members, if possible. Regarding the R61/R60 cable you mentioned, to my not very experienced eye its geometry looks quite different compar...

Re: T601F aka Frankenpad

If you're not looking for 3d acceleration, I think you'd be better off with intel graphics. Nouveau does fine for 2d, but I don't think the incremental gains would be worth it for the loss in battery life (plus the expense of a known-good nvidia board or the risk of chip failure for an old board). Y...

Apologies again, yours was the first cable ever that I pre-folded (only 1-2 mm) too "big".
No worries, everything worked out in the end. I can't believe how much brighter the LED backlit screen is compared to the CCFL, and it draws noticeably less power as well. I'm very happy with it.

Looks great. I'm curious if you put the modem back in? It looks like you have room for it. Which LCD panel does that system have? Since I haven't shared my frankenpad experience, I'll jump in on this thread (hope you don't mind). I just finished building my second frankenpad two weeks ago. The first...

I recently upgraded the CPU in my T430 to an i7-3632QM. Oh.. that must be an ergonomics feature?.. I have quite a bit of issues with my hands.. Maybe I should try.. Do you do it at OS level? Re: Resources for **30 EC battery control

So you'd basically need to locate the operations in EC firmware that checks for that GPIO status bit and replace them.. Probably find some unused "register" (similar to 0xb4 in ./ectool -w 0xb4 -z 0x06) and read value out of that "register" instead of using the GPIO bit? All this assumes that the b...

Quality of T61 14.1" SXGA+ vs T60 15" Flexview

Background: I just finished my frankenpad project that I started about 5 months ago. It took a lot longer than expected, in particular because I had a lot of difficulty with the screen replacement, which turned out to be a bad panel. The completed frankenpad has the HV150UX2-100 LCD panel and a T61 ...

Do you happen to be using TLP at all? Yes, I definitely use TLP on all of my laptops. I use it to set battery charge thresholds on boot, as well as to disable bluetooth (and other power optimizations it makes). The TLP discharge control functionality only works when connected to AC. This isn't a li...

Resources for **30 EC battery control

I've recently gotten some slice batteries for my X230 as well as my T430 and W530 (the W530 really needs the extra battery life...). One of my favorite aspects of my T61 is the ability to balance between the traditional battery and the ultrabay battery, using the tp_smapi linux kernel module coupled...

Re: Advice on RAM upgrade. ThinkPad X230

The full dmidecode output doesn't show any obvious reasons unfortunately. It is possible the graphics card was allocated some of the system RAM. There should be a BIOS setting for this. It's also possible (although unlikely) that the memory visible to Linux was artificially limited at boot time usin...

Re: Advice on RAM upgrade. ThinkPad X230

If you have two DIMMs installed, there should be two entries in dmidecode for the two different DIMMs. If you run 'sudo dmidecode | grep DIMM', do you still only see 'ChannelB-DIMM0' listed? On my X230, I see 'Locator: Channel-0-DIMM-0' and 'Locator: Channel-1-DIMM-0'. Note thought that my X230 has ...

Re: Installing classic keyboard into X230 with EC firmware mod

I've done this mod on an X230, T430 and W530. It isn't too hard in the grand scheme of things, and the X230 was the easiest. I highly recommend getting an X220 palm rest. You will save yourself some frustration with needing to cut off some of the tabs on the bottom of the keyboard. However you will ...

Re: T60: Requesting help setting up GRUB

Any idea why it hangs? You shouldn't need to boot into any kind of compatibility mode (which isn't really a thing), as long as you are using a 32-bit version of the OS. If you hit 'e' at the grub prompt, you can edit the boot menu. Then remove 'quiet' from the kernel parameters if it is there. That ...

Finding good quality batteries can be a challenge. They don't pop up too often. You do see them every now and then on eBay. If you can find a panasonic cell battery (FRU 42T4620) they are the best in terms of degradation over time. I managed to find one of those with 80% capacity left, as well as a ...

I haven't tried to open the X230 battery (19+), only the T430 (28++). Unfortunately the chip is on the underside of the PCB, and I didn't want to completely disassemble it. There's an interesting looking switch on the right side of the circuit board that seems like it's meant to detect when it is re...

What to do with dead 28++ slice batteries?

Through some bad luck on eBay, I've wound up with 5 seemingly unused, but dead, 28++ batteries. They won't take a charge (tried T430, W530, and TP external charger). There's 0V coming off of the charging port. Out of curiosity, I opened one up and measured ~1V across each of the cells (3V across the...

I recently acquired a W530, with an i7-3840QM CPU and nvidia K2000m graphics. Considering the age of the laptop, I repasted the CPU and graphics card. I didn't think to measure CPU temps before repasting. I'm a little surprised by the temperature after repasting though. Idle temps after running for ...
