The only difference between a retail WinXP CD and a "generic" OEM one (or a volume licence one) is in the setupp.ini file. You can convert a retail CD into an OEM one by changing the data in that file - a google for setupp.ini will turn up some sites with the values needed for the different types of...

Just had a look at the non-IBM antennas I tried and on the back it says "Sansei KP-2". They would have fitted under the keyboard but I tried them along the sides of the screen. The IBM antennas will only fit at the sides of the screen. The 1802 error won't affect an X23, the BIOS restriction only ca...

I can't say for sure but I think you'll find the Dell-branded Intel cards are identical to non-Dell-branded ones. Should work fine in an X23. I bought some cheap no-name antennas on ebay, ones that were made from small, thin printed circuit boards. They worked but I found the range was poor. I repla...

Re: Two copies of Windows 2000 on one drive?
I suspect that the Windows installer wouldn't let you do this. I'm pretty sure it will - if it detects an existing installation of the same OS on the drive it will prompt you to install in a different directory. Then when you boot up you'll get a menu asking which one you want to use. Actually I li...

My hunch is that what you described will work - even just with Win2k's own dual-boot option, no 3rd party product. Only way to know for sure is to try it though. I think I might be inclined to test it first on an old hard drive if you have one. Applications could be a bit tricky - you will definitel...

I stand corrected - that's an S30 which does indeed have a 10.4" screen. The chief advantage of mobile P3's vs. normal ones is lower power consumption - meaning longer battery life and less heat to get rid of. The 600MHz and faster ones have "speedstep," which allows the CPU speed to be varied dynam...

The pre-n products are 802.11g compliant. If you want better performance than 802.11g performance right now, you can buy something that has a non-standard faster mode, or wait at least a year. You pays your money and you takes your choice. And to be fair to the vendors, none of them are currently cl...

I have a Belkin pre-n router, a pre-n card in my desktop PC and also one for the X24. I rarely use the one I bought for the X24 - I thought I would want the extra throughput, but it turns out the internal 2200BG is adequate for my purposes most of the time. On the whole I'm quite happy with the Belk...

I bet the new laptops are quite usable and sturdy, perhaps the best there are. However, the screenshots do not look appealing to me, but no Thinkpad has ever looked appealing. It is still a black box. For nice design, Apple is the way to go, but I like the Thinkpads as well, because of its reliabil...

I think I'd read that the patch was expected to be released 1/10. So if they upped the schedule due to public demand, the Win9x patches may be yet released in the near future. I think Win98 support is still active ... I know Win95 support was discontinued a while back. Little chance of a Win 98 pat...

I think a patch for Win98 is likely, MS have said they will continue patching critical vulns until the middle of this year. They released a Win98 patch for MS05-054 in December, and that was of a similar severity. Well it looks like I was wrong (as per GomJabbar's CNET link). Thanks a bunch Microso...

Nothing.. I HATE icons on my Desktop.. (Which is why I could go back to Windows 3.1 if it were powerful enough lol) If you go back to Windows 2000 you can still use the Windows 3.1 program manager (start/run progman.exe), you can even make it the shell in place of Windows Explorer :) The Windows 3....

The X20 and X22 have different part numbers for the LCD cover so I'd say the odds are it won't fit. As for removing the superglue, have you tried one of the proprietary "superglue remover" solvents? Or acetone (nail polish remover)? Either could damage the plastic though so best to try on an inconsp...
