The only difference between a retail WinXP CD and a "generic" OEM one (or a volume licence one) is in the setupp.ini file. You can convert a retail CD into an OEM one by changing the data in that file - a google for setupp.ini will turn up some sites with the values needed for the different types of...

Just had a look at the non-IBM antennas I tried and on the back it says "Sansei KP-2". They would have fitted under the keyboard but I tried them along the sides of the screen. The IBM antennas will only fit at the sides of the screen. The 1802 error won't affect an X23, the BIOS restriction only ca...

I can't say for sure but I think you'll find the Dell-branded Intel cards are identical to non-Dell-branded ones. Should work fine in an X23. I bought some cheap no-name antennas on ebay, ones that were made from small, thin printed circuit boards. They worked but I found the range was poor. I repla...

Right, but it will say "reserve not met" next to the current bid. Often sellers will start out low and not put a reserve on at all, just because they're confident the item will reach a decent price. For a lot of things there seems to be a "market value" that most auctions finish close to.

Have you tried disabling the trackpoint? I don't think a wheel on a PS/2 mouse will work if the trackpoint is also enabled (certainly the case on my X24 anyway). A USB wheel mouse works OK.

Re: Two copies of Windows 2000 on one drive?

I suspect that the Windows installer wouldn't let you do this. I'm pretty sure it will - if it detects an existing installation of the same OS on the drive it will prompt you to install in a different directory. Then when you boot up you'll get a menu asking which one you want to use. Actually I li...

Interesting that the links GomJabbar posted both contradict one detail in the FAQ. The FAQ says screen cleaning fluid is a mixture of water and ethanol, but those links specifically say not to use ethanol.

What about getting another 6-cell battery, and taking both batteries with you? When the first battery gets low, just hibernate and switch batteries. If your current 6-cell battery is almost giving you enough lifetime now, maybe you'd only need to recharge the reserve battery once a week or so.

My hunch is that what you described will work - even just with Win2k's own dual-boot option, no 3rd party product. Only way to know for sure is to try it though. I think I might be inclined to test it first on an old hard drive if you have one. Applications could be a bit tricky - you will definitel...

I stand corrected - that's an S30 which does indeed have a 10.4" screen. The chief advantage of mobile P3's vs. normal ones is lower power consumption - meaning longer battery life and less heat to get rid of. The 600MHz and faster ones have "speedstep," which allows the CPU speed to be varied dynam...

You can configure it to act as a mouse-click when you tap it if you want to. A handy feature on some Dells I use at work, as their trackpoint buttons are so horrible... but I don't use it on my X24 because I find its buttons much more ergonomic.

The pre-n products are 802.11g compliant. If you want better performance than 802.11g performance right now, you can buy something that has a non-standard faster mode, or wait at least a year. You pays your money and you takes your choice. And to be fair to the vendors, none of them are currently cl...

The X20 and X22 have different part numbers for the LCD cover so I'd say the odds are it won't fit. As for removing the superglue, have you tried one of the proprietary "superglue remover" solvents? Or acetone (nail polish remover)? Either could damage the plastic though so best to try on an inconsp...
