Re: Thinkpad P51 & P71- motherboard upgrade?
The HMD program tells you exactly how to do it...... In your case that would be 1S followed by 20HKCT01WWxxxxxxxx where xxxxxxxx is your S/N, all without dashes. I've got the serial number entered now, and it's booting into Windows. But I'm still having a problem with turning the machine on. The po...

Re: Thinkpad P51 & P71- motherboard upgrade?
Yes, I can, but it's sometimes hard to actually turn on the machine. When I press the power button, it doesn't turn on. I can't work out how to enter the new serial number.

Re: Thinkpad P51 & P71- motherboard upgrade?
I've tried using the HMD USB key, it boots into the software for changing the number, but I can't understand how it wants me to enter it. It says it must be 18 characters, but with "1S" as a prefix.

I was wondering, do you know which size of Torx screws the LAN card has? I think it's a T7.

Re: Thinkpad P51 & P71- motherboard upgrade?
It looks like you also need special tools, like the Torx bits (TR7-TR10), for the LAN card, and other things, according to the HM manual.

So, with the HMD, you would make a USB key that you boot from, just like you would boot from a recovery key?

Re: Thinkpad P51 & P71- motherboard upgrade?
Like normal, with any ThinkPad new motherboard replacement, the model type and serial number have to be added. If they are not added there will be errors at startup. How did you add the model type and serial number- does the serial no. stay the same? Which model type would it be, if it is an upgrad...

Re: Replacement for aging W520...is the P15?
It's possible to use the SK-8835 and SK-8845 Ultranav keyboards with a laptop, if you have to have the old type of keyboard. For example, you could use them with a laptop in the P50 or P70 series. The modern chiclet keyboard is very good, though. I would recommend at least the P51/P71 in the P-serie...

Re: Replacement for aging W520...is the P15?
It depends what you're using it for. If the W520 is sufficient for what you're doing (work or study) then maybe you should keep it. Do you have the best CPU & GPU that the W520 can work with (Core i7-2920XM & Quadro 2000M) ? I think it's best to avoid updating the system BIOS, unless there's a very ...

Re: Replacement for aging W520...is the P15?
Hello, it's time to replace my aged W520. It has been a great machine but was killed by the last "critical" BIOS upgrade (8BET66WW 1.46). After that, it's been so slow it's almost unusable. I have used my Thinkpads on AS/400's (iSeries) for much of my career, so I use the F-keys constantly. When I ...

Thinkpad P73
Does anyone here own a P73? How does it compare to earlier 17" Thinkpads such as the P70 and P71? Is the keyboard of the P73 and P72 narrower compared to that of the P71 and P70 (which I've read somewhere)? Can you turn off the HDR feature on the P73's screen, or do you have to use it all the time? ...

Re: Thinkpad P71- MXM graphics card upgrade?
So, I guess the other option would be using the Thunderbolt 3 port, to use an external graphics card. Would that mean you would have to use an external display, instead of the display that the P71 has? Does anyone know the maximum amount of RAM a P71 can hold- is it 64GB, or 128GB? Some sources on t...

Thinkpad P71- MXM graphics card upgrade?
Does anyone know if it's possible to install a graphics card in the P71, that's better than the P5000?
For example, the RTX5000 card in laptops such as the Dell Precision and HP ZBook use the same MXM graphics card slot as the P71 has.

Thinkpad P70 & P71- replace display panel?
I was wondering, is it possible to replace the screen on a 1080p P70 or P71 with a 4K display? I guess it would need to have the right connector available to use (40-pin) to suit 4K. Would a P70/P71 that came originally with a 1080p screen also have the 40-pin connector, or would it just have the 30...

Re: Thinkpad P51 & P71- motherboard upgrade?
I haven't pushed anything substantial with this new setup. Mainly only recovering the system to a new SSD and the many Lenovo and MS updates. This P71 came with the 01AV344 but I installed a brand new 01AV344 for good measure. You probably don't want to have to replace it down the road. Brad Do you...

Re: Thinkpad P51 & P71- motherboard upgrade?
The GPU is the FRU I referenced and its a separate PCB. The upgrade was a success. Like normal, with any ThinkPad new motherboard replacement, the model type and serial number have to be added. Re: Thinkpad P51 & P71- motherboard upgrade?
Does the GPU have its own PCB (FRU)? I was thinking of perhaps replacing the CPU (motherboard) with a Xeon m/b at some stage, but perhaps keeping the existing GPU. They often seem to sell secondhand m/b's without the GPU FRU included. How did your upgrade go? Are there any potential problems, such a...

Thinkpad P51 & P71- motherboard upgrade?
I have a few questions. Is it possible to replace (upgrade) the motherboard on a Thinkpad P51 or P71 yourself? Do you have to upgrade by swapping the whole m/b, or can you just replace the GPU by itself? Can you still use features like the Pantone colour calibrator and Lenovo Vantage, if you've upgr...

SK-8835 keyboard- US language?
I have a question about the SK-8835 Thinkpad keyboard.
I was wondering, is it possible to buy a foreign language 8835, and then swap some of the keys from a US-language 8845, to turn it into a US language 8835?
