Re: IBM's ThinkPad T42 LCD - A Blast from the Past

Back in the day, our old Toshiba Protege was the only one that had its screen illumination tube burnt out... we then switched to ThinkPads, and have never looked back ;) Our (small) fleet of notebooks was standardized on Win'XP, same reason as yours... Now our (small) fleet of notebooks are standard...

Re: IBM's ThinkPad T42 LCD - A Blast from the Past

...six years of use for $2500 is pretty darn impressive. That's the beauty of ThinkPads... when you amortize the ThinkPad cost over 5+ years, you actually get a good bang for your buck! Especially if you extend your ThinkPad to 5 Year Warranty like we do. I still miss my T42 for its 4:3 TFT LCD scr...

Update: So the X1C1 (X1 Carbon 1st Generation) apparently cannot fit a "2280" PCIe sized SSD apparently.

An SSD will definitely speed things up nicely.
I suggest a 250/500 GB Samsung 860 EVO and get a caddy for a 2nd drive to put your old 500GB HD in the CD-slot for storage.

There are six (6) generations of X1 Carbon on the market right now, and the next generation (7th gen) available around summer 2019. 0. Since yours is an OS-specific question, perhaps it may be better if you ask this in the Linux forum. Think I've heard something about Microsoft and Lenovo did something to the BIO...

Better to get the largest SSD from ThinkPad and be done with it. If you extend the Warranty of your X1C8, this would cover your SSD also! I for one am horrified by the poor implementation of the PCIe SSD interface. B-key? M-key? B-key and M-key? Does your PCIe support NVMe? Or does your PCIe support...

Re: 2018 X1 Carbon display

1. In practice, the default desktop of many 14" X1 Carbon users is FHD (1920 x 1080), and 300 nits LCD brightness is plenty enough for indoor use (and the occasional outdoor use). If you do photo editing and feel you need WQHD (2560x1440), then by all means get the 300 nits LCD brightness one. There...

Like Thinkpad4by3 said, if your SSD data is *not* encrypted, you can just take out your SSD (pls check with Lenovo to confirm this would *not* void your warranty, if any?). Put your T25 SSD into a compatible external SSD enclosure, use another computer to copy your data onto another SSD or HDD. Be s...

Just to ensure everyone's on the same page: I believe OP's X1 with i5-2520M (circa 2011 CPU) was the original X1 model launched in 2011. OP did clearly state that his X1 was "pre-Carbon" model. ie: OP is not referring to X1 Carbon (1st Generation), which was first launched in 2012. https://en.wikipe...
