Well that sort of worked - I got a bootable CD and I ran memtest and got no errors, even after about fifteen minutes of testing. But exiting memtest simply made the machine boot back into memtest again - i.e. I couldn't look at my hard drive, search for known virus files or do any of that good stuff...

Thanks for this link: http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm It'll be a valuable resource for those unhappy times. I didn't know about it before. I'll get to work, do what I can. The suggestions for replacing drivers and suchlike are going to have to wait until I can get into the computer.... I need a bo...

Well how about that.... I posted a reply from the library computer on Saturday and it hasn't took... Well, we finally got our ADSL enabled on our line today so I'm cooking with gas. Here's the exact message: Stop: 0x0000001E (0xC0000005,0xBFA984D0,0x00000000,0x00001028) KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED T...

Kmode fault on boot... what to do?
My T21 gradually got worse. Started off with the screen occasionally blacking out and then more and more and then throwing up dos text screens with a message about 'kmode exception...' (if I remember right) and now that's all it will do. I can't get any other response out of it. What to do? Is it be...

So I guess I must look for some other cause. The thing has booted up alright again this evening. I have downloaded the meter and I will try it on the machine. If the machine didn't have a recent history of screen blanking - ever since we tried it with an external monitor a couple of months ago - I'd...

Thank you for your informative advice. The notebook is alright this morning so I think you might be right - it could be a heat related CPU problem. It was fiercely hot yesterday and the day before. However the thing is inside, not outside, and shouldn't have gotten hotter than 40 Celcius, I'd say, a...

T21 screen goes black
Just two days before I go on a 3000km road trip where I need it to download the digicam pics my T21 has decided to switch off the screen and go blank a couple of minutes after startup. This doesn't look much like a hardware fault, does it? FnF7 doesn't fix it. Nor does FnF4, nor FnF3 (whatever that'...

Surely whatever power setting it has would only turn the screen off when the machine is unused for some time? And I'm sorry I didn't make it clear but I mean this happens during the course of one's work. We're busily hacking away and the screen goes black! However I'll check it as soon as I can. No....

Screen suddenly goes dead since using a monitor on T21
My T21 works well, usually. A little while back I plugged a monitor into it and a usb keyboard and it has always had a serial mouse plugged. For a while it worked well like that. No problems at all. The monitor screen would light up, the T21 screen would go black and we'd compute on, no problems. Th...

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'll look for the IBM item on eBay but I'll probably finish up with a generic voltage converter - our market place isn't quite as big as usa and it's not always that easy to find things on eBay... no... not Melbourne to Bris... try Katherine to Adelaide... regards, ab :)

Charging a T21 in the Car
Do I need to buy some proprietory charger or a plug or something to take my T21 on a 2000km car trip with me? Or do I just get one of those 12volt to power supply voltage (240 here in aus. 120 there in usa) car transformer things and plug the standard charger into that? Or am I better off relying on...

So I cannot change thresholds on my T22? ( Which the vendor tells me is a 900Mhz machine and it is the built in win2K system analysis prog that cannot understand a machine of such blinding speed and erroneously reports it as 200Mhz... phew...) Then the warning I found seems pointless especially if I...

Thanks for the responses, guys. I searched a little further through the thinkpad material and found a place where it cautions not to recharge the batteries when they are over 90% !! I read this as meaning don't use on the mains once the batteries are fully charged. i.e. don't remain on the mains onc...

Should you Use Power whenever available?
Should I use the mains power whenever available for my T23 (I think it is) or is it better to let the batteries run down before plugging into the power (and thereby, it seems, inevitably commencing a recharge) ?

ab

Use the Power Supply for preference at all times?
Hi... I've got a Thinkpad, T21 I think, it's not written on it, all I can see is 'type 2647' if that's a clue. I want to know if I should always run the thing from the power source if it's available, regardless of the state of charge of the battery? Or should a full battery be used and allowed to ru...
