Surprise addition to collection: A21m *PICS*

A few months ago a friend gave me an old Thinkpad that was used at some point by someone in his family, and was no longer needed. Turned out to be an A21m - a specimen I've never seen before. These are the original specs: ThinkPad A21m 2628-GXU : PIII 800 MHz (256KB) 64MB RAM 20.0 GB 14.1 TFT 1024x7...

Congrats, that's going to be a nice hybrid system. :thumbs-UP: I still have a warm spot for my T42, which was the first Thinkpad I bought:

Re: What to replace an X201s with?

I feel that on a PC, the upgrade isn't worth the money because you get to a point where unless you tape your LCD to your head , you won't see any noticable difference. That's why I did not subscribe to the "OMG Thinkpad 25 is so crap because its display is only FHD and not QHD" screams of horror, b...

Re: What to replace an X201s with?

Actually funny enough I put a 1920x1080 screen in my T450 and I have trouble seeing the small font at normal scaling. I have normal vision and I still sometimes hold the display against my face to see what some things say. My vision is probably a tad better than normal (*knock-on-wood*), so most of...

Re: What to replace an X201s with?

I imagine most people scale it. Windows has gotten better at handling scaling, but it's still not perfect. MacOS has always been much better in this regard, that's why Macbooks have been shipping with ultra-high-res screens for years, and no one is complaining. I don't know where Linux stands in thi...

Re: What to replace an X201s with?

What is roughly the same size as that and has 0. decent build quality, doesn't feel toylike or flimsy. I find that annoying. 1. a good screen, about 1400x900, with some outdoor viewability. 2. good keyboard feel. That's essential. 3. I need only modest computing power, the X201s with SSD was adequa...

Re: WiFi Options for ThinkPad A31

My favourite PCMCIA cards back in the days were the Ralink ones, some of them even had "N" compatibility, albeit at 2.4 Ghz only. I'm certain that some of them must be still floating around, and for not too much money. The nice think about Ralink cards is that they allow WPA2 over Windows 9x. Since...

Isn't it on the "S" mode only? I no longer believe any IT journalist because most of their Windows 10 articles are crap. Neither do I, but in this case even they clearly stated that it was just a test feature for the Insider channel; none of it ever made it to any mainstream release channel (and gi...

Your talking to the two top Thinkpad Forums users, both know just about everything about every Thinkpads and their owner just off the back of their hand. What you did was basically like asking Einstein "are you 100% sure about special relativity" When you first post on a forum, people's credentials...

Re: Affordable 32" (and 40") 4K/UHD/2160p monitors are finally available!

I have good news for you: it's 40", not 42"! Joking aside, 40" is really not that big. At one point didn't you have two Dell 2007FP's side by side? A single 40" monitor (or TV) occupies significantly *less* desk space than two 2007FP's, while providing more than twice the total number of pixels, us...

As a long time firefox user i'm used to google spamming about chrome being better, more secure etc, any time i try to access google docs or similar properties. Precisely. Why does this sound so similar to Microsoft's shady tactics in the late 90's with IE. Some companies never learn. Oh, no, they d...

Re: Affordable 32" (and 40") 4K/UHD/2160p monitors are finally available!

I hate the fact that 42" TVs are cheaper than 32" monitors with the same resolution. I don't want a freaking 42" TV on my desk, and 28" UHD is too small. 32" is perfect for me.

If glaring white backgrounds is what you want to avoid, find a dark theme and call it a day (or a night).

I am, at the moment, looking to replace my T420 screen as it already has 1 pixel that is dead and to be honest, it is annoying the heck out of me. Given the one pixel, I am sure others will follow and I want to head it off before that becomes a problem. You are wrong in the sense that dead pixels u...

Re: My first T601 build

Speaking of design, my favorite is T60 14.1" 4:3 model, don't like 15" that much. Yep, the 14" is much tighter. The 15" is a bit weaker in terms of tolerances, and often has more creaky, flexing parts, loose hinges, etc. Still, it's one of the best 15" Thinkpads, and the Flexview to me is a nice en...

Rather awesome build. :thumbs-UP: Flexview screens are great, the T60 is one of the best-designed and best-looking laptops in the IBM/early Lenovo era (although not all agree), and the T61 components with the Middleton BIOS really give it a nice boost in performance which was not there when the T61 ...

Re: WWAN Card compatibility

WWAN and WLAN are separate functions. Not every WWAN card can do WLAN. There are combo cards that do both, but as most Thinkpads have BIOS whitelists, it may refuse to accept such a card.

True another thing about that is you can get 1066MHz DDR2 RAM as well since the T61 supports a 1066MHz FSB AFAIR, the T61 maximum supported RAM speed is 333MHz (DDR2-667), so even if you use higher-speed modules it will still run them at the lower speed. As far as FSB, you are right that it support...

The Centrino branding refers to the entire platform (CPU + chipset + wifi). If it doesn't have an Intel wifi chip, it doesn't get the Centrino label.
And surprisingly, you do not have to have Intel wired LAN to get the Centrino label (e.g., T43 and Z-series which have Broadcom).

I was surprised that I actually frequently enjoy using the touchscreen on my Thinkpad 25.
