Did you try removing the keys in the affected area and making sure all the traces are clean / unobstructed / unbroken?

Re: List of (postclassic) Thinkpad models and quick recap in here ?

The *540 are the first Thinkpads with alphanumeric keypad as far as I recall. The 14" models (*440) do not have them. T/W540 are the higher-end model, with W being the workstation model with better GPU, supporting more RAM, etc, but identical chassis-wise, IIRC. L540 are slightly lower-end systems (...

Re: How to store 'new' batteries?

AFAIK its basically the A31p that throttles, possibly the W700 since both can easily draw as much as their adapter can supply, well at least with using the smaller 170W with the W700 or ds variant. AFAIK, all Lenovo Thinkpads that use the 20V round plug throttle down if a 65W PSU is used without a ...

He mentioned that he can boot from external drive, so either the problem is something specific to the main disk connection, or it's in software. Since he can mount the Windows partition, I assume the boot sector got corrupted (malware?). I would try a boot sector fix / repair first, and if that fail...

VMs are great for many things, but not if you want raw graphical performance or direct access to hardware (device passthrough to VM is supported sometimes but not always). Running in a VM permanently disconnected from the wide web might be too much of a hindrance for daily work, and if you connect y...

You can just get an aftermarket 44+/44++ battery that has the chip and will properly work and charge properly in the X230. They are not so rare nowadays.

Re: How to store 'new' batteries?

Well, a 65W PSU had enough juice in the past, but still. And recall that we are discussing an X230 here, not a modern ULV offering. In any case, although I have no concrete evidence that modern Thinkpads throttle anything without a battery installed, running any laptop without a battery is just dumb...

Re: How to store 'new' batteries?

But storing them at 20-40% is more desirable to avoid the potential for an under-voltage condition killing one cell, and thereby the entire battery. I'd even go as far as suggesting to charge them to 80-90% before storage. The degradation is theoretically still much lower than when at 100% (and hea...

They day you reactivate windows update all pending updates get auto installed. Not if you change the policy to "auto download and notify for install". Nothing will get auto-installed this way, however - the ability to selectively control which updates to install is still severely limited (I believe...

The X220/T520 are the last with the classic 7-row keyboard.
Correct, but it should always be noted in this context that the X230/T430/T/W530 series can be retrofitted with the 7-row keyboard via a fairly simple mod + EC patch.

Re: Flush-mount Laptop Adapters Part 8: More USB 3.0 and a little USB 3.1 *PICS*

Hi and thank you for your feedback. For compatibility and performance, in an X220, I'd recommend a USB 3.0 card based on ASMedia ASM1042 or Fresco Logic FL1 1 00 o (not the FL1000 which is older and slower, nor the uPD720202 with its glitchiness). As far as choice of drives and SDXC cards - it shoul...

Re: [T430s] HD4000 + dock 4337 can't display triple monitors

The exact limitation is that 2 of the 3 displays must be DP displays, because there are only 2 PLLs in the chipset, and only DP displays can share a PLL. A small exception is that if the two external monitors are exactly the same resolution and refresh rate, then you can get it to work even if one (...

The Win10 GUI is quite snappy on a modern system with graphics drivers optimized for the new OS model. Of course, a 12-year old T61 does not fall into that category.

T23 is a newer/potentially better system, unless you are looking for DOS audio support, which is doesn't have; for pure DOS gaming, a T20/21/22 is better.

Again, from my experience, the best ones are the panasonics and the sony ones, I have seen batteries made by those 2 who lasted many many hundreds of cycles and would still hold a decent charge. SANYO on the other hand, while cheaper, decay very fast, I have seen some sanyos that after less than 40...

Update: tried 3 times yesterday with my X1C5 and could not reproduce the problem; screen timeout is set to 10 minutes, and surely after 10 minutes are up without touching the keyboard/mouse, both screens turn off. The OS is Windows 10 1803.
