I think the last one was a T430s with classic keyboard conversion with i7 and Thunderbolt. That one was an awesome unicorn That one went to me (not through the forum), and was featured in my "Lenovo's last classic Thinkpads" picture tour and history article. I'm looking at it as I'm typing this pos...

AFAIK, brightness being always on in the pre-boot environment is a design limitation of the new models, and there is no way to change it.

Mainstream / workstation (outside of the A21e/A22e which was more 'budget').

Something from the A2x series. 14" by the looks of it, so not a A21p/A22p. The name on the left side of the LED strip is not readable, but I think it has an 'm' on the end, so A20m, A21m or A22m.

No, it does not. The backup battery stores nothing but the BIOS settings. The hibernation file is stored on the hard drive, as you said.

Re: Has anyone succeeded at swapping cpus on X6x boards?

It's a lot of work, technical work with specialized equipment to replace a soldered in CPU. Going from a L7400 to L7500 will only gain you 100 MHZ which is marginal at best. Indeed. Also the bus speed is 667 Mhz for the L7400 and 800 Mhz for the L7500 which is problematic. Which means that even if ...

Re: Recommend a Video Editor for Low Powered machines like our T60?

I was thinking the same thing (about VirtualDub), but can be considered a full-fledged editor, or just a converter with some minor editing features? I've certainly used VirtualDub on weaker machines (like a Pentium 4), and was happy with it. The UI is very light; the CPU speed merely determines how ...

Well, I do think that if this laptop had a design fault that everyone who puts it in a bag for one hour ends up with a broken machine, then we would know. This would also be one of the most original and intricate design faults ever. :) There may be something else at fault with your particular unit o...

But for Windows 10 Home or Pro, there is nothing to configure in Windows Update, is there? There are; things like active hours, when it's OK to restart the PC, whether it's OK to restart the PC, whether it's OK to automatically install updates or not (the last one is only available in Pro, BTW, via...

Re: Windoze7: Life after End of Life ???

Support has cost and overhead attached to it. The fewer products and configurations you support, the less work you have to do. All of Microsoft's tactics for Windows 10 and EOLing older products follow the general strategy of minimizing the number of active products in the market. They are not the o...

Does anything happen when you almost close the lid (like the screen turning off)? If not, then it's possible that the magnetic sensor which detects the mechanical action is faulty.

My advice to Win 10 users. Reinstall your OS regularly. Backup your files religiously on USB to make the process easier. Uhm, that's probably the worst possible advice to give. Like saying "replace your car engine regularly". Win 10 runs better than Win 7. If it runs better than 7, why does one nee...

Re: a T430 with a classic keyboard and FHD IPS mod

I suppose the T430 beats up the T420 instead, with the classic keyboard and everything, with the exception of defunct Fn+F3 and Fn+F8 hotkeys. What I miss is the Fn+F12 to hibernate. Can your ThinkpadHotkey.exe intercept Fn+F12 and do something with it? If so, I'd love to use it. However, I thought...

Re: What are the pitfalls of an X301?

Garbage screens (significantly worse than the average TN) + no docking support.

Battery life may be OK (since it's a ULV CPU) if you have the 6-cell + bay battery and both are in good shape, but with how old these machines are at this point, it's not easy to find batteries in good shape.

If you can obtain a miniDP to VGA adapter, I would try another test - connecting both monitors to the X230 directly, via VGA and miniDP-to-VGA, and extending the desktop.

Also, try to see if a different operating system behaves differently.

I was a little skeptical of the forced updates, and was very concerned about instability. But it has been just over 3 years and none of the Win 10 updates have caused any serious issue. Some updates potentially cause issues to a certain subset of the users, so you may never experience it but someon...

It can be a software problem or a hardware problem with Thinkpad or dock. Very unlikely that it's a monitor problem.

Does it flicker when you connect only that one monitor through the VGA on the dock? Does it flicker when you connect directly to the laptop VGA (when the laptop is undocked)?

Other odd things: Jacky did not write any return address on the waybill; and declared that the package only contains a "computer motherboard" worth $20 (it contained full barebones X230 laptop, as expected). This (undervalued inaccurate package description) seems normal practice for Chinese sellers.

Via the right click it will still say "success" even if the driver was not in fact installed. Obviously it's irrelevant for when t...
