Re: Anyone else ditching the Thinkpad?!

Which retains the main characteristics of classic models. Like, status lights. I think most people would agree that these are a legacy feature. If your best example of a "legacy feature" that people miss, and the absence of which makes the Thinkpad 25 a bad machine is "status lights", then all I ca...

Re: what PCs were first to use serial ata

Yes, you are correct. SATA may have come out in 2000, but as with every new peripheral technology, it took a couple of years for it to be integrated into mainstream chipsets. Before that time, you could conceivable enable it via a PCI adapter in your desktop system. For Intel, ICH5 (~2003) marked th...

Re: Anyone else ditching the Thinkpad?!

I was merely explaining why I preferred Thinkpads for almost a decade, due to one of the ~10 points that you listed (better design). Also, the OP seemed to be asking about people's personal preferences, not objective truths. Yep, it's a fair reason. Thinkpads still enjoy a pretty unique design, alt...

Re: Anyone else ditching the Thinkpad?!

Thinkpads' keyboard layout is not intrinsically superior. If you are used to it, it may be hard to adapt to other layouts, but someone familiar with Dell's or Acer's or Panasonic's keyboard layouts might also have difficulty adapting to the Thinkpad layout. Between around 2012 and 2015, I had an X3...

Re: Anyone else ditching the Thinkpad?!

It all depends on why you valued Thinkpads to begin with. The reasons will be different for different people. Off the top of my head I can think of: reliability, durability, easy maintenance, upgradability and explandability, design, good service, keyboard, trackpoint. There are probably others. A p...

Hi and welcome to the forum. :) Regarding the Turbo Memory stuff - the recent Windows 10 Fall Update (RS3) added additional restrictions on drivers, and it may be that the old one is no longer compatible. You cannot expect there to be better drivers for technology that's 10 years old and was EOLd a ...

If you know a large company that use ThinkPads (there are very few of them now over there) check how many people actually use trackpoint. It'll give you the answer. It doesn't matter how many people actually use the trackpoint; at this point it is still a a checkbox item on business-class notebooks...

Re: [T430s] advice for new batteries

The only reliable source of good new genuine batteries is Lenovo, and their prices are never good... You may be lucky finding a somewhat aged, almost unused genuine battery from a private seller who got one by mistake, or is getting rid of spares because his laptop died or something like this. But y...

Re: Time to crowdfund the real ThinkPad: let's see how badly we want it

RAM is prone enough to failure that it needs to be replaceable / upgradable. Care to prove? Your own experience does not count. How can one prove something like this? Even if you could obtain large-scale statistics (which in itself is hard), there is still the matter of defining "prone enough". It ...

I agree my opinion is that the 8460p is purdy, while the T420 is one of the worst looking Thinkpads. Its successor T430 is a much better laptop, faster, prettier, and lighter. I have seen your lovely picture show of T420 vs T430, and although I understand the subtle differences in the way the chass...

It should work fine with the basic things. Whatever it cannot pull, you should be able to install manually from Lenovo's site, or Intel's site. It should not crash like XP does when the IDE controller changes under it.

It's not required even now. The "serious" bugs have little practical implication, for someone not actually using AMT.

Every piece of software/firmware ever written is buggy. Intel AMT is a rather complicated one as well. And Intel always works actively to fix AMT/ME bugs as they are discovered.

They have to provide a custom SPI image for this. Essentially it's no different than any other customization option.

The Power Management Driver for Win10 supports all Thinkpads since the beginning of the A/R/T/X series.

But you also need a video (GPU) driver installed for Suspend/Sleep to work. The 'Microsoft Basic Adapter' does not support Suspend/Sleep.

Yes, I believe you can swap the keyboards and apply the embedded controller patch. I know it possible on T/W/X*30 systems and I don't see why the tablet would be different. CPU performance-wise, for similar clock speeds, there will not be a big difference. The following difference may be more signif...

Yes, it is. Really, any SATA drive is hot-swappable, except I think there is a bit somewhere that tells the OS whether to treat it as a fixed drive, or a removable one, and eSATA ports should have it always enabled.

That is a combo port: eSATA + USB 2.0 . It is physically connected both to the SATA controller, and to the USB controller. The USB controller, however, is 2.0. There is nothing USB 3.0 in the T420. The fact that eSATA (when connected to a SATA drive) is faster than USB 2.0, and often faster than USB...

A standard USB cable will work fine. Just use a little more care, when plugging into it or unplugging it. It's kind of a tight fit..
