Re: T430s dock ejection

No, it's SATA (which ultimately goes through PCIe, but it fully supports hot plug/unplug). However, if you have a hard drive there, and it's being actively accessed, then perhaps yanking the laptop out of the dock can be bad. In normal situations, you don't really need to press this button.

Re: T430s dock ejection

Indeed, and since there is not a dock for T430s that has a PCIe slot, there is no need for such a button.

Re: T60 freezes while in operation - Windows 10

What could be defective about the heatsink? It could be warped and not making proper contact, or the heatpipe can be broken. Maybe I should have put thermal paste on the GPU and northbridge? I only put thermal paste on the CPU because the heatsink has the thermal pads in place for the other chips.....

Re: Compare installing one W10 with seven(7) Linux distros

What I find is the longer Windows runs, the more memory it puts in the pagefile . If I close and reopen apps, it does free up memory but I like my sessions full on and don't close browsers or log out of anything I've opened until I reboot. It is not really a good habit security wise but it is the w...

Perhaps buying a laptop cooling pad/mat with a fan?
Same comment as with the idea of removing the Wifi card.

If you are sure that you have mounted the heatsink correctly, then there is still the chance that it's just defective. I would try hunting for a cheap replacement as a last resort.

Indeed. As you see from just the last two posts, anecdotes and personal experiences about memory management are plentiful, and go both ways. I find it difficult to draw meaningful conclusions from them. It would be nice to see a good indepth study comparing the differences between Linux and Windows ...

There's definitely a BIOS option to permanently disable AMT. Just checked it again to be sure. Really? Which laptop is it? (and which BIOS version to be sure?) You cannot set AMT to permanently disabled, but you can the other two.

The disadvantage is obvious - you can never enable them again, if you decide you want to. Most home users will never want to.

Re: Compare installing one W10 with seven(7) Linux distros

There are some misconceptions in the above such as: Using more RAM at startup means being less efficient. This RAM typically includes pre-caching of common applications for faster startup (aka Superfetch), which actually makes the OS more efficient, if you have enough RAM. In fact, all recent versio...

Let's make sure first that the CPU is actually idling. 78C after sleep can be because something is using the CPU 100% without you realizing. If you CPU is idling at 78C, then removing the wireless card is like opening a window to cool down your house when it's on fire. It's a meager thing with zero ...

Re: T60 freezes while in operation - Windows 10

This definitely suggest something is wrong with the heatsink or with its contact points. A small chance that it's a sensor problem, but both sensors at once - very unlikely. You say that you feel that the fan is blowing out hot air. Does the machine feel hot as well? I assume yours is a standard T60...

Re: Which battery recommended for X220?

44 is identical to 29 except it contains the authentication chip that allows the X230 to charge it. Thus, an X220 can take both a 29 and a 44. An X230 (unless the EC mod is applied) can only take 44. 29 batteries are no longer manufactured, so any you get will be older, and probably have lower maxim...

Re: T60 freezes while in operation - Windows 10

That's very very hot. There is something wrong with your heatsink, or the machine is too clogged with dust. Try this: turn the machine off and keep it off for a couple of hours (to cool down). Then boot it up. What are the temperatures immediately after boot? If they are low, it suggests that the he...

Get a T430s, and if you find out that you prefer the T420s keyboard - simply apply the EC mod. While at it, you can also apply the patch that eliminate the battery check, and then you can use and charge any T420s batteries in it.
