Re: Retro ThinkPad is.. alive!(?)

When I buy a notebook these days, I'm usually around $500-600, cause that's what I need to spend to get something good. I don't use my notebook a ton, which is why I have a Dell, so if this ventures into the four figures territory, I think I'll pass. I sure hope it ventures into the 4-figure territ...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

That's exactly my point. Shape-wise 16:10 and 16:9 aren't that different, which is why I suspect that many people who hate one much more than the other aren't really bothered by the shape difference, but instead by 1920x1200 versus 1920x1080. Many, perhaps, but far from being the majority. Consider...

Re: Create bootable GPT partition for windows 10?

I am not sure I understand your question, but one thing I can point out is: MBR and GPT are partition table techniques, not partition formats - they apply to the whole drive. Either the entire drive is MBR-partitioned or GPT-partitioned; you cannot mix the two.

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

I completely agree. Up until a couple years ago, 16:10 vs. 16:9 was a fairly pronounced difference as the former maxed out at 1920x1200 while the latter at 1920x1080, and 1920x1200 is much more useful. But now that 16:9 laptops have exceeded 1920x1080, I no longer miss 1920x1200. If the Retro Think...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

T470 + 7row keyboard + 16/10 i preorder. if it is 16:9, i dont think i would buy it. Everyone has their preferences, but to hinge it all on something as minor as a 16:10 vs 16:9 (which is a much smaller difference than 16:10 vs 4:3) seems... strange. Yes, if it has 16:9, one could - considering all...

1. is a strange question. Who would prefer a screen that's both low resolution and worse quality? 2. Neither is acceptable to me 3. Although 12" in 15" shell is exaggeration in any scenario, I would prefer a borderless smaller display without a rollcage 4. That's an illogical tradeoff that has no re...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

Regarding LAN, USB is surely going to replace it sooner or later for consumer devices. They could even make routers/switches with USB ports replacing some of the RJ45 ports. Probably only servers will still have RJ45 ports in a few years. Nah. If it hasn't happened so far, it won't happen any time ...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

When LAN gets omitted on "thin" PCs it will be excused by telling us to carry around a USB-Ethernet adapter. Just another way to shave .04" off the thickness of a machine at the cost of needing to buy and carry around another accessory... Well, considering that Wired LAN is something most people us...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

There are also several complains on Reddit about T470 build quality and BIOS basic functionality issues. This does not bother me much. Such complaints have been there for every model, just different. I haven't seen a Thinkpad (except maybe X30x?) where someone hasn't complained about build quality....

If the Retro project outcome will be just T470 (including no WQHD screen option ?) with 7-row keyboard and no other improvements like missing status LED indicators, I am wondering whom such product actually targets ? Honestly? I'd probably buy it, even just for the 7-row keyboard with a traditional...

Re: I hate numeric keypads. Am I the only one?

Yeah, I agree it's strange like that. On a desktop keyboard, I use the numpad for gaming regularly. However, a laptop keyboard is already mostly unsuitable for gaming as most 3-key combinations jam. Plus, on a desktop keyboard, I can shift the keyboard slightly to one side or the other, depending on...

Re: Can Windows Vista be installed on an IBM Thinkpad R50e?

I don't think there are any differences between Vista and 7 in this regard. Although I did hear someone say that they made the Superfetch a bit "lighter" in 7, which means it is actually less useful. But like y'all, I never verified (or refuted) this claim.

No USB3 dock will be as reliable as a dedicated Mini-Dock / Mini-Dock Plus. It won't provide power either, so it will be at least two cables. You may have a flaky dock, but they are not all like this.

Re: Can Windows Vista be installed on an IBM Thinkpad R50e?

SP2 is the last service pack for Vista. There was no SP3. An installation image with SP2 integrated easily fits on a single DVD (or Dual Layer DVD if you want both 32-bit and 64-bit versions on the same medium).

IIRC others have attempted to jam in a 9.5mm drive in the 7mm slot, on the X220 and T420 I don't recommend it, but the X220 I purchased was running this way when I bought it from the previous owner (with a 9.5mm drive in the 7mm slot, with no caddy), and it seems fine now (I replaced it with a 7.5m...

1) Which specific driver did you install?

2) What do you mean by 'cease to operate'? Is there a particular error message? Does it show as 'unknown device'?

Re: T61 pcmcia sd card reader extremely slow

Do the SDCBA-C01 card mentioned supports sdxc? Yes, depending on drivers. By default, Windows will load a built-in driver by Microsoft for this card. The one for XP does not support SDXC. For Vista/7 it may support it (not sure), and 8.x/10 should support it. You seem to be on Win10, so should be f...

Re: T61 pcmcia sd card reader extremely slow

Is this by chance a PCMCIA (not CardBus) controller? That would explain the low speeds and high CPU usage. Could you find the hardware IDs of the controller? Does it have PCI IDs? If so, what is the vendor ID / device ID? What is the full device chain in Device Manager? (you can see it if you select...

Re: T61 pcmcia sd card reader extremely slow

The CardBus controller in the T61/X61 is atrocious, but your numbers seem low even for that. I tested in an X61 once, and would get ~10MB/s for an adapter/card combination that could do ~20MB/s in my T60. But 1MB/s is very strange. Is there high CPU usage when you transfer to/from the SD card? What ...

Re: T430s dock ejection

No, it's SATA (which ultimately goes through PCIe, but it fully supports hot plug/unplug). However, if you have a hard drive there, and it's being actively accessed, then perhaps yanking the laptop out of the dock can be bad. In normal situations, you don't really need to press this button.

Re: T60 freezes while in operation - Windows 10

What could be defective about the heatsink? It could be warped and not making proper contact, or the heatpipe can be broken. Maybe I should have put thermal paste on the GPU and northbridge? I only put thermal paste on the CPU because the heatsink has the thermal pads in place for the other chips.....
