Re: Help! I need *another* new ThinkPad!

A frankenpad with the latest T61 hardware in a T60/p 15" chassis can still be reasonably usable for day-to-day tasks, especially with a quad-core CPU. You can get 8GB of RAM, SATA2, USB3.0 via ExpressCard. It will lag behind modern machines on everything, but it will not be completely useless (a poi...

Actually I did look at it and if it was available probably would have bought it even tho its as pricy as the Macbook Pro. Well, what do you know? It's available again. Not exactly the equivalent of the R500 today, but still... I consider the Thinkpad 25 a good laptop, but for this particular request - way overkill, eve...

I was under the impression that the xx20 machines had expresscard 2 which came out about 2010. If true this will be different to the T43.
Yes, it's true. Thinkpads up to **01/10 series have PCIe Gen1 ExpressCard (2.5Gbps), **20/30 series have PCIe Gen2 ExpressCard (5Gbps).

Try looking for 70++ batteries (which replaced 55++). They are going to be a bit fresher, although I am not sure new ones are still being manufactured.

There will always be plenty of eBay sellers selling non-genuine (compatible) batteries; you can ask them which cells they use.

Actually the G41 uses a mobile CPU, despite it sharing socket 478 with its desktop counterparts. I'm not sure if a desktop CPU will work in it. The fastest it will support is the P4-M HT 3.46, Prescott core. The fastest desktop variant of the socket 478 CPU was a 3.4, in both Prescott and Northwood...

VGA you can always use, independently of DP. It's a completely separate channel. When docked, you should use the dock VGA, as the laptop VGA is disabled. On the Mini-Dock, DP#1 goes to the DP out, and DP#2 goes to the DVI out, so that will be disabled. The Mini-Dock Plus has a splitter on each input...

Videos played in the browser using Flash/HTML5 containers are always, for whatever reasons, heavier on the CPU than the same videos downloaded and played through an offline player. I never investigated why, but the difference is consistent. That's why software like Minitube exists.

Having read some of the messages here, I've become aware of the nVidia 140m issue - this machine has that graphics processor, so that's quite dispiriting to learn. Yes, you are correct. SATA may have come out in 2000, but as with every new peripheral technology, it took a couple of years for it to be integrated into mainstream chipsets. Before that time, you could conceivable enable it via a PCI adapter in your desktop system. For Intel, ICH5 (~2003) marked th...

Thinkpads' keyboard layout is not intrinsically superior. If you are used to it, it may be hard to adapt to other layouts, but someone familiar with Dell's or Acer's or Panasonic's keyboard layouts might also have difficulty adapting to the Thinkpad layout. RAM is prone enough to failure that it needs to be replaceable / upgradable. Care to prove? Your own experience does not count. How can one prove something like this?
