Re: Differences between a T400 and a T500/W500

Many of the internal hardware components are the same, while most of the chassis parts are different.
You can see very detailed specs of the different models in the withdrawn model book:

Just search for T400 and T500/W500.

Re: Nordic layout of Thinkpad keyboards

Look at the red area.. there’s 4 keys that are narrower than the others left of it. 3 of those 4 are keys for letters - ones that the Nordic languages very commonly use. How can this be that some of them are narrower? You wouldn’t have U, I, J and K narrower than the other letter keys in the US lay...

Re: Keyboard stickers for ThinkPad T400/T410/T420 and T500/T510/T520 Series

I used stickers on a number of laptop keyboards, although not on these particular models.

Stickers work well for a while, then they wear out and become a smeared mess.
Although you can replace them, engraving seems a better option for longevity, if it is available where you're at.

It's true that the needs are different, and as you said - they also evolve over time. Retirement is one of the biggest changers, but it is not the only one. I'd say that 80-90% of my laptop usage is in a desktop environment, with an external keyboard, mouse, screen. So why do I care so much about pr...

When the overlay does not go away, you should still be able to go into the task/process manager, find the process responsible for showing it, and terminate it. I don't remember the name of the process off the top of my head, but I may have had to do it at least once in the past.

Wouldn't the T490 be a better dream given that it gets you access to the six core i7 and very good low power screen? I presume there's some sort of technical hurdle complicating its birth.
T480 and T470 CPUs are the same socket. T490 CPUs are different.

Re: How new my laptop really needs to be? A guide to modern computing

That is a great essay. I appreciate it. My Thinkpad 25 (7th gen, Kaby Lake, dual-core) is 6+ years old. It is still pretty snappy for day-to-day tasks that do not include heavy number crunching or too much multi-tasking. With a proper 6/8-core desktop, it can stay as my primary laptop for years to c...

Re: Liquid damaged T430s has no right click!

Quite possible. The trackpoint is part of the keyboard, the touchpad is a separate device, and connected via its own cable to the keyboard. However, both pointing devices sit on the same PS/2 channel, so a fault with one can disrupt the other. The first thing I would try - disconnect the touchpad. I...

That strengthens my feel that XP is preferred on this generation. On a high-end Pentium M, many DOS games will already play with good performance via DOSBox (the emulator), sound, MIDI and all.

And yeah, it tends to work much better on a fresh install. The upgrade option doesn't always pick up everything and you'll be left with weird quirks. The last time I upgraded from WIndows 10 to 11, the suspension stopped working (I fixed it switching to S3 suspend and back to S0ix). In short, I'd j...

Unless you want to play DOS / early Windows games natively - then you may consider Win98, but it will not be as smooth and as stable an experience.

With some of the models (or at least my t470 and by extension any t480) there’s a specific direction and angle you have to lift and pull the cover, or it will break a bunch of clips. The HMM has the instructions. Yes. And even if you don't break the clips, you can deform them (or the cover, or perh...

There are options for an in-place upgrade:

Windows 10 will use Windows 7 drivers to the best of its ability. Some will work out of the box, some won't.

Now just the "Product name is invalid" message displays. Isn't the product name similar to "21CB000D"? If not, what is its format? Doesn't seem to be anywhere in the Lenovo site for my laptop. It's typically the 4-character product ID, followed by a 4 character type, then a 2 character country code...
