So I checked out the manual and here's the fix-it list:
1. I'm going to try resetting HDD1
2. Then try replacing the backup battery
3. Then try a cmos download from IBM
4. Last attempt, replacing the system board
I'll let you know how it turns out... wish me luck!

Updates and more questions
It does ask for the date and time everytime it tries to boot! For some reason or another it boots sometimes. Like twice in twenty odd times. I'm definately going to look into cmos battery, but I didn't even know they exist so /any/ help with that is also much appreciated!! The memory check finally d...

in thinkpad diagnostic testing it hangs on memory and hdd1
has win98, would it be a good idea to load win2000 or xp? which would work best?
