Re: Near mint X61s with dim screen = trash?
I don't know....but if it were me, I can't throw even semi-good stuff out. Maybe connect a spare external monitor, and go from there. Or, pick up a cheap monitor at a thrift store or something. Yeah, njae, nah, I don't like this option; it's a laptop after all. IPS upgrade may be a tad tricky on th...

Near mint X61s with dim screen = trash?
The other day I fetched my X61s out of storage, intending to use it in my workshop as a general test/measurement/control machine (huge amount of connectivity on this laptop!). It's in really great condition, honestly looks almost new, and it has a Core2Duo L7500 CPU, 128gb SSD, 4gb RAM, and the X6 U...

WTB: SelectaBase 770
I have a SelectaDock III, and a Thinkpad 770X, but I'm missing the adapter plate to make it fit the dock. This is called SelectaBase 770, IBM p/n 11j9009. Maybe someone has a spare one of these for sale, or swapsies with a SelectaBase 600 (which is currently fitted to the dock)?

Re: Why THINKPADS & who's 2nd best ?
If you've got money to burn, I think a T480 with the T25 keyboard mod ($400 for the mod kit) is probably the most powerful machine that fits your requirements: https://www.xyte.ch/shop/t25-frankenpad-kit But this has a glossy screen and cannot be considered a "small" laptop by any standard. By smal...

Re: Why THINKPADS & who's 2nd best ?
I'd be willing to consider a machine from any manufacturer as long it has: TrackPoint Small size Matte screen Sculpted keys ThinkLight* AFAIK there are no alternatives to the Thinkpad line, and the X230 with an X220 keyboard I'm currently using is the last machine that meets my requirements. Depress...

Completely dead X200s
I was clearing out my storage and stumbled upon my old X200s, which I had forgotten I still had. Took it home and tried to get it to start up, but although the battery still takes a charge(!) other than the charge/power LEDs the system remains utterly dead. I've tried the usual things; removing batt...

Thinkpad X220/T410/T420 UK keyboard FRUs
Hi all, I'm looking to buy two replacement UK keyboards for an X220 and an X230 (which I'll be modding to take a "classic" keyboard), but I'd like to know what brand I'm buying. Common opionion seems to indicate keyboards made by MNB are the best ones to get, but how can I tell? I have found some FR...

Re: SIM card orientation, Thinkpad X220
SIM card is inserted as per the image. I have also tried adding a layer of tape on the back to make it a little thicker, and to ensure that the mini/micro cut-outs stay in place. Still nothing. Here are the modem details from ModemManager: # mmcli -m 0 /org/freedesktop/ModemManager1/Modem/0 (device ...

SIM card orientation, Thinkpad X220
So I recently got an X220, after the trusty X201s I had been using for years died a death (don't ask). And on the whole it's a really nice upgrade: Generally faster Better 3D performance (in Blender at least) Better video playback (my X201s tended to get hot) 16Gb RAM support (unofficial) USB3 port ...

Re: Time to crowdfund the real ThinkPad: let's see how badly we want it
I think I would just go for the X61 with a Full HD IPS panel, modern ports (VGA can be kept but remove modem, PC card and firewire for HDMI and Thunderbolt 3), and upgraded internals (8th gen CPU, 16GB RAM, SSD). Yeah, the X60/61 is about the perfect form factor for a laptop; I still use my X61s al...

Re: X201s constantly overheating
My X201 went into thermal shutdown again this evening, while rendering a 3D model in Blender. That was the final straw; I immediately ripped the whole thing apart (motherboard has to come out to get to the fan assembly) and once I got the heatpipes off the chips the cause of the problem was immediat...

Re: X201 i7-620M vs X201s i7-640LM
indeed I sorely wish there was a Thinkpad in the "X" series which had a "UM" ("ultra low power") i7 CPU, but it seems no such beast exists. All the newer X-series (starting with X240) use only "UM"-equivalent CPU (15W TDP). 25W-35W are not even options. That's good to know, but I cannot even consid...

Re: X201 i7-620M vs X201s i7-640LM
The 640LM is a "low power" part, with a TDP of 25W, whereas the 620M is a regular "mobile" CPU with a 35W TDP. Since I've always struggled with overheating the "LM" is much preferable - indeed I sorely wish there was a Thinkpad in the "X" series which had a "UM" ("ultra low power") i7 CPU, but it se...

I've been battling Thinkpad overheating issues with 'buntu since forever and I'm starting to get seriously p****d off.
