Re: SIM card orientation, Thinkpad X220

SIM card is inserted as per the image. I have also tried adding a layer of tape on the back to make it a little thicker, and to ensure that the mini/micro cut-outs stay in place. Still nothing. Here are the modem details from ModemManager: # mmcli -m 0 /org/freedesktop/ModemManager1/Modem/0 (device ...

Have you tried putting the SIM card in a different device and removing the PIN?
The card normally sits in my Sierra Wireless 3G/4G router, and has no PIN set. It is a "normal" EE (UK) 4G data SIM.

SIM card orientation, Thinkpad X220

So I recently got an X220, after the trusty X201s I had been using for years died a death (don't ask). And on the whole it's a really nice upgrade: Generally faster Better 3D performance (in Blender at least) Better video playback (my X201s tended to get hot) 16Gb RAM support (unofficial) USB3 port ...

Re: Time to crowdfund the real ThinkPad: let's see how badly we want it

I think I would just go for the X61 with a Full HD IPS panel, modern ports (VGA can be kept but remove modem, PC card and firewire for HDMI and Thunderbolt 3), and upgraded internals (8th gen CPU, 16GB RAM, SSD). Yeah, the X60/61 is about the perfect form factor for a laptop; I still use my X61s al...

*bump*ing this in the hope someone can help. And no, installing Modem Manager GUI won't make the slightest bit of difference, since the modem is "unregistered" by the kernel during boot. The question is why this happens...

Re: X201s constantly overheating

My X201 went into thermal shutdown again this evening, while rendering a 3D model in Blender. That was the final straw; I immediately ripped the whole thing apart (motherboard has to come out to get to the fan assembly) and once I got the heatpipes off the chips the cause of the problem was immediat...

an easy way to update bios is adding the iso to your grub menu:
apt-get install grub-imageboot; mkdir /boot/images; cp yourbios.iso /boot/images; update-grub
That is a great tip, thank you!

Re: X201 i7-620M vs X201s i7-640LM

indeed I sorely wish there was a Thinkpad in the "X" series which had a "UM" ("ultra low power") i7 CPU, but it seems no such beast exists. All the newer X-series (starting with X240) use only "UM"-equivalent CPU (15W TDP). 25W-35W are not even options. That's good to know, but I cannot even consid...

Re: X201 i7-620M vs X201s i7-640LM

The 640LM is a "low power" part, with a TDP of 25W, whereas the 620M is a regular "mobile" CPU with a 35W TDP. Since I've always struggled with overheating the "LM" is much preferable - indeed I sorely wish there was a Thinkpad in the "X" series which had a "UM" ("ultra low power") i7 CPU, but it se...

X201s constantly overheating

I've been battling Thinkpad overheating issues with 'buntu since forever and I'm starting to get seriously p****d off. Having been exclusively using this laptop for a few days I have to say this is the best Thinkpad I have ever owned . 1) The keyboard is great! Maybe not as good as the 600 series, but then I've never encountered a match for these. It's easily as good as my (second best) T43p. 2) The size is perfect....

Re: X200t LCD to X200s - what to do with digitiser?

The CCFL x200s lid is thicker than the LED x200s lid. I believe that the ccfl x200s screen is exactly the same as the non-s ccfl x200. I didn't follow the whole discussion, but if you are sure that the tablet screen sans digitizer would fit an x200 then go for it with your x200s! I went for it and ...

That X200t LCD won't fit in an X200s lid, it's too thick. It may perhaps fit in a standard X200 lid, but I'm not sure about the LCD-cable compatibility. Ah. That's... unfortunate. So I have just butchered my X200t in vain? Happy days. Btw - cable should be the same and in the same spot, based on th...

X200t LCD to X200s - what to do with digitiser?

I recently replaced my somewhat battered X200t with a minty X200s, and to me the slightly smaller size and cooler running is well worth the trade-off of losing the tablet function - which I never used anyway. But gah! That screen! Compared to the X200t the colours are off, the viewing angles are atr...
