Jan, I'm not sure about these old models, it's possible that they were using a differen approach. However, I owned a T23 for many years (and before that a T21) and must say that the heat did not bother me. I'm not sure what your exact intention is for using the program on a T22, but I don't think th...

Maybe it's possible to query the embedded controller through the Windows ACPI system, instead of via direct port access? That's what Linux's ibm_acpi driver does. The problem is, that IBM_ACPI eventually does a port io to do the same. The only difference is that unter Linux you can call ibm_acpi to...

The program is running perfectly on a T42 except one issue: the following warning is being logged to Windows event viewer several times a minute and prevents HDD from spinning down: The embedded controller (EC) hardware returned data when none was requested. This may indicate that the BIOS is incor...

No, we are talking about Windows System log. Can be seen via Event viewer (Control Panel/ Administrative tools/Event viewer) Yep, got that, but stuff isn't written to the system log so easily (not in matter of a few lines of code anyway), so that is something I don't want to do at the moment. Sorry about the crash ... I though I fixed one reason for that but obviously there's still another quirk somewhere in the program. We'll have to see if there's a pattern in these, meanwhile the only resolution would be to not use the program when the notebook is running unattended. Regarding the log...

K.Eng, You have essentially same T40 as mine, do you get signals from all sensors? In my T40 the last four sesors are either absent or not read: BUS 0°C (0xc0) PCI 0°C (0xc1) PWR 0°C (0xc2) XC3 0°C (0xc3) I think this is normal. Other older models also don't have them. Maybe the reason why they're ...

In the T40 there are probably two sensors below the WLAN board. One should be inside the Southbridge chip, the other on the mainboard about 1-2cm left of it (see a t40 here:http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=11574&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 ) And the C1 sensor goes on at 43°C which hap...

Well, the way you describe the offer would leave a sour note. I guess everybody would assume that description to mean brand new unless you're very careful, so I guess these people are playing games and they know it. Otoh, as I said, $600 are not to be ignored and at least it's original IBM refurbish...

@gzt

I'll see if I can make this an experimental feature once all the other stuff works (if 0.18 proves to be solid).

It's probably not too hard but not unlikely to introduce new problems (handling of failiure to set the fan, interactions with other software etc.).

Christopher, the C2 is very likely power supply. It heats when charging batteries and is in the general area of the power inlet. With the 7A I guess it's more likely to check thermal situation of PCMCIA cards. I had a of these over the years (modem, wlan) and all got quite hot when used. Makes sense...

This one appears to be IBM refurbished even though it doesn't come with any warranty. IBM website says the warranty expired 9/16/05 but the packing list inside the box says 10/07/05 (it's an IBM packing list). Well, I purchased a can of cooling spray today. First results without opening the machine indicate 0xC2 is near the grill below the Esc-F3 keys. The currently still unknown 0x7A cools down if I spray into the PCMCIA slot (also makes sense to place a sensor there, I'd say it is on the mainboard below...

Hi! Again: Please do not use V0.16. There is a bug which can stop reading the temps without error message and hence will stop adjusting the fan correctly. I don't think it needs a top level domain. One more thing, it seems to me that the fan speed in smart mode is determined only by the temps, and not like the BIOS which starts the fan at one temp and stops it at a temp which is lower then the start temp i.e it takes into account the current fan state, if it is on it let it do a little more b...

Here's an explanation of the North/Southbridge. With that it would not be unlogical that the northbridge heats up during a game, where large bulks of data is exchanged between CPU, GPU and RAM. I just wish I had the guts to open the baby and play with some cooling spray. Markus North/South The old w...
