Re: [Need Advice] I'm X220 user, and Thinking for 5 more years... what should I change to

Having just spent a month (or more) digging through the current Thinkpad lineup, and some of the models being released this month, you have to make choices... Particularly if you are looking for something in the 14 inch form factor. You can get great build quality and upgrade options in the larger P...

Re: Thinkpad L14 gen 2 AMD

Thanks for the information, I'll look into that further on the 5850u. I did the installation of the new hardware yesterday. I was a little concerned about removing the bottom and breaking some clips, but that went fine. Just had to go slow and take my time. The biggest issue in swapping the componen...

Thinkpad L14 gen 2 AMD

After 10 years, I've finally picked up a new Thinkpad... My wife has been using my old T420 for a while now and I've been using a desktop workstation. A few months ago, i got the itch for a new Thinkpad - a lot has changed since I was reading this board regularly years ago. That said, after a lot of...

Re: Yes, T420s will take 16Gb RAM

I have 8gb in this T410s I am typing on. I had 8GB in my Q6600 in 2009. I have 16GB in my desktop gaming PC. I don't see a need for 16GB in a laptop other than to say you do it because you can. More power to you. Of course you are entitled to your opinion, but if you can make my development VMs (al...

Re: T series - which one to buy? Max RAM

I am a developer and run multiple VMs on my T420 with 16gb of RAM just fine. If you want a machine with 4 RAM slots and support for 32gb of RAM the machine you are looking for is the W series machine with quad core processor. I have a W520 from work. It's portable in that you can put it in a bag and...

Re: T420 eSata?

I've used an eSATA drive with my T420 both via the port on the Thinkpad as well as through the Series 3 plus dock. A couple things you might want to check... 1) My external eSATA drive came with a USB cable and an eSATA cable. The drive would work great via the USB cable, but if I just plugged in th...

Sorry for not returning here but after two new W540 units, both defective, I can hardly think of buying another Thinkpad. I can not believe this as I have been using Thinkpads for over 20 years. Both of mine had boot up and shut down problems and the key boards sucked. Some key always felt and soun...

Re: Should I go with SSD or stay with HDD

I'd argue that if one knows how to trim their OS and only install the bare minimum of other programs on the SSD, 64GB is plenty of space. Take it from someone who sports a 32GB Intel X25-E SLC SSD as a boot drive with W7 and Office 2007 installed, with some 40% of the drive still free... Agreed, a ...

Crucial mSATA drives are getting close... Amazon.com has the 480gb for $229, 240gb for $109 (and the 240gb Intel 530 series for $149).

Oh that's a shame, I use the trackpoint and trackpoint buttons on my W520 often as I don't like moving my hands off the keyboard while programming. Shame to hear they are ruining this feature. (yet another)... sigh. I guess the upside is that my T420 (and other 20 series machines) should be popular ...

Agree with the above. When my T420 is long in the tooth I'll likely buy a Thinkstation or go back to building my own machines. My T420 sits on the dock 99% of it's life anyway.

Go with the Tier 1 brand like Crucial by Micron. Would you put Walmart house brand tires on a Porsche? I think not. I guess the assumption there is that the Wal-Mart house brand tires are just re-branded tires made in the same facility... I've had no issues with the Corsair value RAM in the machine...

Thanks for this feedback. I've been looking at a T540p model as they will let you configure that model with a quad core chip and integrated graphics without a discrete graphics chip (unlike the T440p for some unknown reason - I don't want to pay $139 extra for a low end nVidia chip that I will just ...

Welcome to the forum. I have the T420 in my signature below with integrated only graphics (e.g., Intel HD 3000 graphics). The nVidia NVS 4200m graphics was an option on the T420 and leverages Optimus technology. It's approximately 20% faster than the integrated graphics. From your other post, you me...

No you wouldn't move on from the T series, you'd move up in the T series... to the T440p where you'll find options for cache drives, discrete graphics, quad core processors, full HD (1920x1080) IPS display options, ultrabay, 16gb of RAM support, etc. E.g., the "top end" of the T series line. You can...
