I recently had my hands on a T60p, and I checked the connectors in the UltraBay Slim port. The T60p has a third connector, located between the regular data/power connector (for optical drives, etc.) and the battery connector. This connector is absent from the UltraBay Slim port of my T41. I can only...

It's very easy. Refer to the HMM. It looks harder than it really is. I have upgraded both my T41 systems to Pentium M 765 and they work perfectly, with no thermal issues. The speed boost is SIGNIFICANT. I refer to my babies as T42 systems now :D

I can live with the new keyboard, although the Windows keys are a useless annoyance. What really hurts, though, is the lack of a touchpad-free palm rest option. My beloved A31p never had a touchpad, and both my T42 systems have had the touchpad eliminated by swapping-in the appropriate palm rest. C'...

I can understand how getting (or setting) the BIOS supervisor password could allow an attacker to clear the security chip, thereby mounting a denial-of-service attack. Ugly, and unrecoverable. On the other hand, is the passphrase information stored in the security chip itself at risk? That is to say...

You can clear the security chip. No password is required to do this.
After you clear the security chip, all encrypted data on the machine will be unavailable -- all encrypted data on the machine will be lost forever.

I strongly recommend that you remove all stickers (except the ThinkPad sticker in its recess) from the palmrest immediately upon receipt of the system. The stickers will eventually wear out, and when you finally do remove them they will reveal fresh, un-worn palmrest-plastic underneath. The result w...

If you do a CPU upgrade and subsequently have a problem that requires warranty service, just reinstall the old CPU.
A CPU upgrade on a T4x doesn't require the breaking of any seals -- there's no real way to tell that it's been done (or un-done).

The 765 is the fastest Pentium M you can get with 400MHz FSB. I upgraded my T41 from 1.6GHz Banias to Pentium M 765, and I used MobileMeter to track temperatures before and after. The 765 runs about 2 celsius degrees warmer at idle than the Banias did (57-vs-55) and about 4 celsius degrees hotter at...
