Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

I am also quite prepared for the "Retro" not to happen. Honestly I think David Hill had honorable intentions but the logistics to pull it off with a Thinkpad that would measure up to the majority is a huge task. [...] What is frustrating though is that Lenovo churns out so many products that it giv...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

Lenovo continue to troll all those interested in productivity machines by releasing endless 3:2 aspect ratio tablets with detachable keyboards, while producing no Yoga or (God forbid) conventional laptops in that form factor. Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

There is still no 3:2 laptop (with most of the weight in the base, unlike Surface Book). You are forgetting the Chromebook Pixel. I think I'll do a small review in this forum once I own one to see if it can replace my ThinkPad when combined with Linux. (I have tried ChromeOS previously and swiftly ...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

Would this work: get a 3:2 or even 4:3 Windows tablet, and plug in a Thinkpad USB keyboard? In fact, if you want a really tall screen, use the tablet in portrait orientation. A huge advantage of tablets over laptops is that you can rotate them. Desktop monitors that can rotate also have this advant...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

To my knowledge, the only 4:3 machine still produced today that does not have measly XGA is the Amrel Rocky RK10 with optional SXGA+ LED display . They also have an optional 17.1" 16:10 WUXGA+ display for their RF10 model. Not sure on display quality, since these are fully rugged machines meant for...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

You can save yourself the /e hassle. Go into Explorer, click on Organize/Layout/ Navigation pane Ha! I never noticed that, because I seem to recall about twenty years ago, some version of Windows removed that pane unless you added a command line switch. I have just had it set up as a shortcut ever ...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

I do, a lot of times. When sorting files; two explorer windows side-by-side with each 50% of screen width (win+arrow keys). And when you do a tutorial in Solidworks, it sets the tutorial description-window to about 1/3th the width of your screen and the actual Solidworks windows to the remaining 2/...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

On the bright side, in recent years it has been easier to view two windows side by side. I would like to know if you actually do this, and if so what sort of applications you put side by side and at what width. It may sound like a stupid question, but I know you are very experienced and I feel like...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

The Surface Book screen is a bit too small at 13.5", in my opinion. An important thing that people hope to see in this "Rejoice" Thinkpad is a tall screen. Let's compare some screen heights: 13.5" 3:2 (e.g. Surface Book) = 7.49 inches 13.3" 16:10 (e.g. Thinkpad X301) = 7.05 inches 14.0" 16:9 (e.g. ...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

The Surface Book screen is a bit too small at 13.5", in my opinion. Also the keyboard layout is not very good. I wonder what the economics of OLED are like in terms of ease of production of custom panel sizes. At least for now there doesn't seem to be huge volume anyway and prices are high, so the i...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

again the main reason is to put a trackpad as big as possible. That plus the move to 16/9 which give you less space on the keybaord bezel, they need to get some space somewhere. It also explained why they tried to remove the trackpoint button. The last attempt was such a failure that we saw a rever...

Re: T601 or surrender?

You're definitely not alone in wanting to hang on to a 4:3 laptop. Besides the obvious benefit of vertical space, I was surprised at how much more compact a 4:3 laptop is. All the laptops in my sig are 14", but the T420 is too wide to fit on a university desk while having room for a notebook next t...

T601 or surrender?

I have been using a 15" T60 with SXGA+ Flexview, which I bought from a forum member, for quite a while. I have been generally happy with it, even though I have been using a mechanical disk that is mostly full now (100GB 7200 RPM). I recently bought a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD to upgrade the machine,...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

as i wrote in the last blog post: another tip. If you cant get 16:10 IPS then: 1) get 3:2. That would be very nice for everybody. 2) if not, then try 16:10 PVA/MVA. That can be better than IPS (3000:1 contrast vs 1000:1 for IPS). We just dont want a crappy screen, but PVA/MVA is pretty good too! Vi...

The ThinkPad P40 Yoga was announced today. Can't see what the screen size is, but the chassis is 338 mm x 236.3 x 19.9 according to a spec sheet on ZDNet. 3.9 lbs. 1 memory slot, Wacom AES.

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

Just to be clear about this: If the Retro ThinkPad turns out board a seven row chiclet keyboard (for the sake of trying a combination never used before), I will not buy it. I'd much rather have the non-chiclet six row L420 keyboard. I fear Lenovo will decide that classic Thinkpad fans tend to have ...

Re: Best value machine for general office use

A quick way to deal with T520 extra colors is to decrease saturation between -20 and -30, in intel graphics control panel (intel graphics properties). That doesn't seem like a great idea, though, because surely the goal should be to display colours accurately, and I don't think you get to sRGB from...

Re: Best value machine for general office use

UPDATE: I ended up getting her a T520 with the 1080P screen from a forum member for $750 in January 2012, which from my perspective has been a great buy, and is still going strong. One issue is the wide gamut screen is a pain to deal with, because a lot of software just isn't colour managed, even im...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

I really am praying that Lenovo make a product out of this. I am still using my T60 with 15 inch SXGA+ IPS, but honestly I am tired of it now, mainly because it seems to put out a lot of heat, and I feel I would like more RAM, a higher maximum screen brightness, and ... that's about it. I still love...

Re: T60

Not sure if this is relevant here, but I am running Windows 7 32-bit on a T60 with an ATI X1300, and my driver version is 8.561.0.0, driver date 01/12/2008 (UK locale so DD/MM). This appears to be a little newer than the Vista driver available on the Lenovo support site. I'm pretty sure this driver ...

T520 missing key presses

My wife's T520 that I bought from a forum member has always seemed to suffer from dropping keypresses quite frequently - maybe one character per sentence. My wife has told me the problem has been getting worse, so I sat down to examine the problem. However, now I can't seem to reproduce it at all. I...

I think I need to do a fan swap at this point, I would try to lubricate the fan first. Thanks for the advice. I finally got around to lubricating the fan. I am in the UK, and used Draper air tool oil, since sewing machine oil seems hard to come by these days. The fan sprang back to life and is now ...

Thanks! Finally got around to fixing the BIOS, although I just used the old boot CD I had made back in 2006. Seemed not to need the 01C9 fix, just the no 1802.

My T60 needs some fan treatment so the T30 is back in service!

Re: T60 T61 fan lubrication - illustrated guide by msb0b inside

Nice thread, but sadly I have found it because I have been listening to the slow demise of my 15 inch T60's fan for some time. Yesterday, the fan just stopped, after a violent death rattle. So I opened up the machine, and removed the HSF. I note the FRU is 41V9932, although I don't understand the di...

Wow, thanks guys, lots of very useful perspective here, I really appreciate it. I too am a very curmudgeonly, but my wife is not. The trouble is, I tend to be the one who has to figure out all the issues, and I don't really want to have to do that on a platform I have not chosen. On the other hand, ...
