Re: T42: Remove IBM Service Partition with Acronis Migrate Easy

Since nobody here seems to know this, I thought I would reply to my own message with the answer I found. As I suspected, Acronis Migrate Easy cannot resize partitions. I ordered Acronis Disk Director 11 Home CD, and it arrived this afternoon thanks to Amazon Prime. $29.90 Took only a few minutes to ...

T42: Remove IBM Service Partition with Acronis Migrate Easy

I'd like to remove the IBM Service Partition to free up 5-odd Gigabytes. I have Acronis Migrate Easy and have used it to transfer everything from one hard drive to another. I can't figure out how to transfer the main partition and not the IBM Service Partition. Is that even possible? (I also can't f...

Re: Network Drivers for BartPE Boot CD for T42

Thanks for the reply. I was just about about to post a notice here that I had worked through the problem. As you said, I downloaded the IBM driver, but then I directed it where it needed to go, C:\pebuilder3110a\Drivers. The IBM installer made a folder under the ...drivers folder and unpacked the fi...

Re: Network Drivers for BartPE Boot CD for T42

Yes, the program is set up to use BartPE for a boot CD! The backup program is Image for Windows from Terabyte Unlimited. It works fine with a local drive but the instructions for giving it access to a network consist of : "Load your network drivers." Very helpful. Has anyone here done that successfu...

Network Drivers for BartPE Boot CD for T42

Has anyone here created a BartPE boot CD for a T42? I need a boot CD to run my Windows backup/restore program. I successfully created the boot CD, and it works, but I need to add the wired network drivers so I can access my backup disk images. The instructions on Bart's site are pretty sketchy, and ...

Re: For Sale: Google Nexus One Smartphone

Thanks for the report, ThinkRob. As I said, I used it on AT&T so I only used the EDGE data, not 3G, which is only available on T-Mobile with this model. I actually got most of my data via free Wi-Fi, which is becoming widely available. I had good reception with the EDGE data and voice network signal...

You can pick up an internal floppy drive for the 600 series for $7.50 on eBay, with free shipping and buy-it-now.

Any problem you can solve for $7.50 is not a big problem :-)

For Sale on eBay: Google Nexus One Smartphone

It’s not a ThinkPad, but I’d like to list this here before it goes to eBay. I did sync it with my T42 :) Executive summary: mint Google Nexus One cell phone for sale. Details: This is a Google Nexus One Smartphone. I bought it direct from Google the day after they first became available, so this sho...

Re: T42 Troubleshooting Bad Motherboard

It was a bad motherboard. I scored a replacement on eBay for $30.50, including shipping. Swapped it in this afternoon and evening, and everything is working fine now. I replaced the original 27K9980 with a 93P4156, just to match my other two. Booted right up from the original hard disk. I'd never to...

Anyone with an A30 or A31 should jump on these. I bought two for the A31's I gave my grandkids, and both worked like new. High-quality batteries for ThinkPads this old are hard to find.

Thanks for the replies. As I said, it's completely dead, no fan, no lights, nobody home. I checked both power supplies I was using for testing, and both are putting out the normal 16-odd volts. I also have an AC ammeter, and it measured 11 mA AC on the input to the power supply alone, going up to 12...

T42 Troubleshooting Bad Motherboard

One of my T42's seems to have died suddenly. It's a 2373-JTU, a 14" XGA 1.7 MHz. When I went to turn it on, I noticed the green charging light was not on, and pushing the power button had no effect. I tried a known good power supply with the same result. At some point in my testing, the computer cam...

I got my similar 380XD up to 160 MB of RAM by installing a 128 MB memory module. That, plus the 32 MB built-in memory brings it up to 160. The modules are hard to find and expensive when you do. I bought mine on eBay for $48 back in 2006. The auction said it would also work in the 380Z, as well as a...

WTB: Battery and Keyboard for 14" T42 (FOUND!)

I need some parts to complete a bare 14" T42. The battery should run for an hour or more. My keyboard has broken mouse buttons, but nice keytops. A 13N9957 with missing/worn keytops would be ideal. Will consider other keyboards if complete and not too worn. Shipping is to 30907.

Thanks,

Re: Thinkpad 701c wireless

It is possible to add WiFi to a 701C. I'm running a LinkSys PCMCIA card in mine under Windows 98SE. Only a LinkSys WPC11 Version 3 will work -- the Version is very important as the Version 4 card is a CardBus type and will not fit in the socket. (Actually, 16 vs 32 bits has nothing to do with it -- ...

Re: Better glue for case repair

I think the best solution would be to get a hard wire (think axles in toy cars), place that underneath and epoxy that in to provide more strength. I bought a T-23 from realblackstuff two years ago that he repaired in exactly that way. Maybe he will chime in here and say what he used for the metal r...

The Arctic Silver folks recommend using "Goof Off" paint remover to clean the parts prior to applying a thin layer of their product. Works very well. Don't know if that's available outside the US. Check the Arctic Silver web site for the chemical name of the product, which I forget.

Be careful if you install "Tweak UI". There's a good reason Microsoft doesn't support it: some of the changes it makes cannot be easily reversed, even if you un-install it. I'd recommend a complete hard drive image before installing it. (Well, actually I'd recommend steering clear of it entirely.)

I would recommend you go ahead and press the "Access IBM" button, and run the recovery process to wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall Windows and the IBM drivers. A T42 should run circles around a T23 (I have both, also). Did you do a fresh recovery of XP, or does it still have the former owner's system on it? Tell us which model you have from the sticker on the bottom, all 7 digits please.

Re: Bought used T42 Want to get rid of all the BLOAT!

The IBM Recovery does not take up anywhere near that much room on the hard disk. The previous owner must have left something on there. I'd go ahead and run the recovery and see what you end up with. Since it's a "new" system you don't have any data to worry about. Lenovo currently has an automatic u...
