Re: Bluetooth in a T601 Frankenpad

[...]in one of my spare Thinkpad T61 I noticed that there are 4 cables coming out form the lid, one for the WWAN, two for the Wi-Fi card, and there is a fourth white cable going under the wi-fi module into an insulated small white envelope, connected to nothing. Any idea why that white cable is the...

Re: Thinkpad 380XD USB Drivers in WIN95

If you are getting desperate, then can I check if you've tried to install the usbsupp.exe and usbupd2.exe files? Is that what people have already suggested above? Those are the ones that I have squirrelled away with my Windows 95B installation disks. I never had 95C, and actually I kinda forget what...

Heh heh. Not sure what they have up there now, but at one point apparently they had 68 A31's and 32 T61p's. It's hard to tell whether something is a T500 vs a T61p, I think? When you check out a video of the inside of the station, you can quickly see why they like Thinkpads: the Trackpoint is essent...

Class action case against Lenovo settles - $40 payout for 2014-15 laptops with adware (no Thinkpads listed)

I am wondering whether there's a particular form of masochism that exhibits itself in one's preference for post W7 MS operating systems... Perhaps! I am once again surprised to learn that something that breaks mapped drives in an enterprise would get rolled out. I don't quite know why I find ...

I also have found a limit of around 32GB for 600 and 128GB for 600X (I have no 600E). I don't think that's right for the 600X. I'm pretty sure I had a Hitachi 160GB drive in mine, which was the largest PATA drive available at the time I was last using it. I think I had to make sure that no single p...

Re: need advice with 380XD Win95 installation

In really old Thinkpads, you couldn't always boot from USB because the USB port actually required some drivers to load first. And sometimes you couldn't even reliably boot from CD-ROM! I can't say about the 380XD. But you could always boot from a floppy drive - either one installed directly in the T...

Re: 701C obscure disk issue? Any suggestions?

My guess would be something related to "IRQ channels". IRQ = Interrupt Request Channels. In DOS and Windows 95/98, you had to manually configure which devices would use which channels. With Thinkpads, you could do some of this using the Thinkpad Configuration software. For some devices, it was even ...

Re: need advice with 380XD Win95 installation

Not sure if I am remembering correctly, but I think used to use a generic IBM cd sys driver when I was installing Windows 95/98 on 1990's era thinkpads. Looking at an old set of boot disk files, I see one named "IBMTPCD.SYS". My AUTOEXEC.BAT file has a single line: MSCDEX /D:TPCD001 (Which means you...

Whoa. I just did a quick eBay search to check out the prices on a PCI Voodoo 5 5500, which is the card I recommend. The prices for those are now insanely stratospheric (i.e. $400-$1000). So you might want to try a cheap nVidia card of the same era and see if you can that to work. You should be able ...

When I was running Win7 on this machine I shut off Optimus & manually set the M2000 in the BIOS. Found it to be much more powerful, and less glitches. The problem with the forced updates is not the updates, but the process itself (that it forcefully takes control of the PC from you, and restarts it, killing all your unsaved work without a prompt). Win 10 has never done this to me. Nor to me, because both you and I are "power users". Folks not in ...

I doubt it's an issue with the DVDs. I personally never managed to get SoftDVD to work on my 770ED or 770Z machines, but I didn't usually start with a factory restore. I guess you're using Windows 98 if you did a factory restore? Or is it Windows 2000? I think that SoftDVD is designed to work with W...

Re: Review: X1 Carbon Tablet Generation 3 (circa 2018)

I finally broke down and ordered one of these last week. What I really wanted was a modern machine with a classic keyboard and a good screen with some height to it. But there is none. My W520 I think has a CPU that is as powerful as the (non-upgradeable) CPU in the ThinkPad Retro 25. Which made me t...

Re: 770x type 9549 - RAM, CPU and Selectadock Questions

The only Pentium III 850 one I see is listed for 90. Seems kinda high for a old laptop cpu. Yeah, that sure sounds high to me, too. But I think only one or two mainstream laptops (no ThinkPads) were built that used them in that MMC forum factor, so not many were manufactured. They used to go for so...

Re: 770x type 9549 - RAM, CPU and Selectadock Questions

For the cpu, is there any advantages for using a higher clocked cpu than a pentium iii 500mhz? Would it be worth the hassle to get the higher clocked cpu to work? If you can get a PIII 750 or 850, then yes, those will make a slightly noticeable difference over a PIII 500 in processor-intensive acti...

Re: 770x type 9549 - RAM, CPU and Selectadock Questions

The 770X and 770Z both support up to 512MB RAM. On my 770Z, I use 256MB + 128MB in the main slots and then replace the onboard 64MB stick found in the back, hard-to-get-to slot with 128MB. 256MB chips used to be very expensive and hard to get, so this was the most efficient way to get the max ram.
