I had this exact problem when I first got my Thinkpad. There was an old post about this that solved my problems exactly! It linked to a university help page that was very helpful. I can't find the thread now, but I try searching through the forums.

So it seems that the T60 widescreen had an ALPS while the T60p had a NMB. The ALPS seems too soft. The NMB is more "IBM-like".
