Re: IBM Intellistation maximizing RAM

I'm considering replacing my 6221 for Christmas. I'm torn between a second-hand 9228 (the last of the IBM workstations) or a new ThinkStation. The former is more server-like (it's basically a re-badged System x) and (IMO) better-designed, but the latter will give me a bit more power for some of my ...

Re: IBM Intellistation maximizing RAM

ThinkRob, thank you for the great advice (as always)! :) To be honest, with all these laptops with 8 GB and more memory, I would not think that it would be a problem for a desktop. But definitely, silent data corruption is the last thing I want. Indeed, the Kingston RAM appears to be the best offer ...

IBM Intellistation maximizing RAM

Hi, I will be getting a second hand IBM Intellistation Z pro delivered in a few days. According to specs, the machine takes DDR II 400 MHz PC2-3200R 240-pin ECC SDRAM DIMMs and supports up to 16 GB RAM . It comes with "only" 4 GB installed and has 6 RAM slots . I would like to upgrade the system mem...

I am in a similar situation. If I were you, I would get a ThinkCentre with good Pentium 4 and PCIe x16 slot for a dedicated video card to support hardware acceleration.

IBM Intellistation Z Pro video cards?

Hi, does anyone know how upgradeable the video card (PCIe x16, full lenght, full height) of an Intellistation Z Pro of type 6223 or 9228 is? By upgradeable I mean, are there any BIOS-related limitations (like whitelist or similar) for the video crads, that is, would any card within suitable specs wo...

IBM ThinkCentre M51-8143 inquiry

Hi there, Looking for an old rig to make a small home server/universal PC, I got a deal at the local resellers for a second hand IBM ThinkCenter M51-8143 (desktop only) for about 130$. So, before purchasing, I decided to make a small inquiry about that old beast to see if it has the features to fit ...

Re: Alternative to Windows 7 Search

I did a clean install of Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit on my T60 back in February and I am very happy with it with one exception. I have tried changes Win 7 folder options to be able to search contents of files or use a wildcard and to no avail. Is anyone using third party search software instead of Win 7 ...

Thanks for your reply, Harry! Actually, I haven´t run the LiveCD yet, because I tested today the other driver I had in mind, and the external display has been working stable all day, so I could not reproduce the issue (under Windows). I don´t know if it is just a lucky day or the problem was really ...

IMHO, that would be the perfect resolution. You get best from both worlds: wide enough while minimizing vertical scroll, more real estate and easier on eyes than the 15.4'' 1920x1200.

occasional loss of signal to an external display

I am not sure I completely understand the problem. Are you referring to some built-in microphone in the ThinkPad or to external micrphones or to both of them? Which Windows are you using? In any case, it seems like the micro is under cover... By coincidence, the warranty has just expired. It´s not a...

there are at least 4 different models I am aware of that come with 4 memory slots: ThinkPad W701, ThinkPad W510, Dell M6500, HP 8740w. I can´t say though how many units of these models have been built in total :)

May I ask, in what sense would it be a trade-off? You know, you can still keep the Catalyst Control Center with all its whistles and bells.
