Excellent! Thanks James. I put the whole thing back together to keep from losing parts and to see if reseating everything would help. No luck. My next step is to make some short leads and hook them up to my voltmeter and check the output of the inverter. Accessing that point looks much easier than e...

I've never been this far inside a ThinkPad before. I used the HMM to remove the LCD assembly. I was surprised to find the CCFL inverter not fastened to anything. It's just held in place by pressure from other components. Anyway, I have the LCD assemly out, but it's pretty scary. To proceed further r...

Doesn't anyone have any tips on determining whether the CCFL or the inverter has failed? Voltmeter at a certain key point perhaps?

So far (in my universe), there are three kinds of people who have a laptop that isn't theirs. First, there are people who find a laptop. I've left my planner in an airport, and I'm sure people have left their laptop in a taxi or somewhere else. We should make it VERY easy for people to do the right ...

Jdhurst, I don't think you'll honestly notice much differece going up 400mhz unless maybe you're doing some really cpu intensive work or maybe video rendering. You'll get at MOST about 28% speed boost. That's if it's very CPU intensive and your data set is small enough to fit in the CPU cache. Vide...

X20 Restoration Stage 1

Hello gang, I bought a used and abused X20 on eBay for what was probably too much money. But it dit come with an X2. I tested the floppy and DVD drive on the X21 I bought recently. (Thanks again, Bruce!) Anyway, this X20 needs a LOT of TLC. Even though I should probably just sell it, hoping to get c...

What's the most effective way to escalate EZ Serve?

I have an X21 with a wonky hard drive. I called EZ Serve on 10-5. They said they'd send a hard drive and recovery CD. The next day, the CD arrived. On 10-8, I called to check on the hard drive. They said none were in, and there was no ETA on them. I asked when they were supposed to come in. I was to...

I think you're on to something there, but that laptop is now used by my 78 year old father as his first ever computer. It's MORE than fast enough to play solitaire and poker! If he ever gets on the internet, it'll be fast enough for e-mail and (most) web browsing too. That machine won't be getting a...

Resume times depend heavily on your OS. Windows 98 is notorious for long resume times. Windows XP is much faster and has an easier time of recognizing devices that have been added and removed while suspended.

Which OS are you using?

Dang, I was *sure* I had seen one. I know it's possible to use a USB chip (which are everywhere) and hook it up to an ISA bus. Apparently no one thinks it's worthwhile. Anyway, here's something that might do the trick: A network-based shareable USB hub. Keyspan US-4A Device Server. Go to amazon.com ...

Several companies did make 16-bit USB 1.0 (or maybe 1.1) cards, way back when. You should be able to find them on eBay.

But lately, I haven't found any new USB cards that aren't CardBus.

If you decide to get G at home, it's going to be nice to have the option. Some corporate networks are on A. I'm thinking of moving to it myself, both to avoid interference in my own house and neighborhood, but also because you can have 24 non-overlapping channels with A, and only 3 with G, so 8 time...

On my 600X, I made a small boot partition, ext3, swap and the majority is one big NTFS partition at the end. I don't know if GRUB still requires the boot partition in the first 1024 cylinders, but I play it safe. I've used Red Hat 7 and 9 and Fedora Core 1 and 2, Knoppix and Gentoo, and they all wor...

Re: X20 extend memory >384Mb?

What is the reason for this "limitation"? Bios? or? Chipset (Intel 440BX) and number of memory slots (only one). http://homepage.hispeed.ch/rscheidegger/ram_bx_faq.html The 600E, 600X and most 600's use the 440BX. They all have some memory built-in, and two slots for a total of three banks of memor...

Reasons I buy only ThinkPads: - Reliability. They are built well and last. - Usability. Great keyboards. TrackPoint. - Cachet. They are just plain cool. You know you want (another) one. - Fantastic web site. BIOS and driver updates for machines that are ten years old! Want to install XP on a 770? Th...

RAM

(I'm on a roll, apparently...) The 600E runs its bus at 66MHz. However, I have used PC100 memory successfully in both of the ones I maintain. The 600X runs its bus at 100MHz. I have not had luck using PC133 in my 600X. It seems that for any 256MB module to work in either the 600E or 600X, it must ha...

Unsuccess Story

I take care of two 600E's for family members (a -3AU and a -4AU). There are some models of 600E that will not accept 256MB memory modules (A5U, 55U and others... IBM's site is down at the moment). I tried to upgrade the CPU in the 2645-3AU (300PE Mhz PII) to a 400MHz PII. It kind-of worked, but seem...

The 600 bay is called UltraSlimBay. I have two 600X's: 2645-5FU (bought new) and 2645-9FU (junker on eBay). Both are the 650MHz SpeedStep type. 5FU came with DVD; 9FU with CD-ROM. Both have video out. I do not recommend using the machine as a DVD player as DVD playback to video requires a 16-bit dis...

My sister-in-law has a 600E which she likes, but now she'd like something smaller. Something in the X line will do the job. Just about anything will do, as long as it is in good cosmetic shape. Please PM with offers.
