I'm running ubuntu too on a t42 with the ibm wireless. It has an atheros chipset which is covered by the madwifi drivers. Atheros drivers arent standard kernel drivers but the crew from ubuntu was kind enough to patch their default kernel with the madwifi sources. hail to ubuntu :) Running 2.6.9 now...
