Re: ibm thinkpad t22 help please :(
Having installed Win2k and WinXP many times on various Thinkpad T2x Models, I honestly don't understand what is supposed to be so hard to do. I never had to download any special drivers from the Internet for this, nor were there any particular problems during installation. If you want anything speci...

Re: T23 LCD goes black except for .5" horizontal line across top
Why not just ask here in the Marketplace? So where can I find entire cheap T23's or T4x's just mother boards that will work so cheap?

Re: ibm thinkpad t22 help please :(
I'm very suprised to read some of these replies - reinstall windows, or learn linux! You shouldn't be. There's a great difference between a Windows password and a Thinkpad supervisor password - the one is a hardware problem, the other strictly software (Windows). And in this case, the software is o...

Re: ibm thinkpad t22 help please :(
Ah, actually, the system could have a supervisor (aka BIOS) password and it will get past the splash screen and start booting the OS as long as you don't actively attempt to access the BIOS (or remove the CMOS battery). True, but the OP also remarked: tried all sorts...safe mode ...etc/taken batter...

Re: ibm thinkpad t22 help please :(
tried all sorts...safe mode ...etc Which means that you have no power-on, supervisor or HDD passwords, since otherwise you'd never get past the IBM splash screen. This is obviously a software problem. Or is it Windows itself that wants a password? That's the impression I have, and if that's the cas...

Re: Graphics Resoldering Service Launched in UK and Europe
The only thing is that since they are the plastic disposable type, I'll have to make sure I don't get 'Syringe melt-down' during mid application. As far as I know, the syringes themselves are made of polyethylene, which is nonpolar and should be fairly resistant to attack by DMF (it attacks polar m...

Re: Graphics Resoldering Service Launched in UK and Europe
How long does it take to dissolve the epoxy? DMF (1,1,-dimethylformamide) wouldn't actually dissolve the epoxy, as an epoxy is crosslinked and is essentially one huge molecule, but it would soften it enough to let you scrape it out. I have no idea how long this would take, but might guess anywhere ...

Re: T23 LCD goes black except for .5" horizontal line across top
About the only thing I could recommend would be to resolder the inductors on the board even if the soldered joints appear to be OK - it's possible one or more of the joints were dislodged/disturbed by the fall. Am I nuts to buy the whole motherboard and put about $150 into this T23? Only if you pay ...

Re: Graphics Resoldering Service Launched in UK and Europe
I came across a potential solution how to remove the epoxy: "Attack Epoxy Remover" Thanks for that information Beeblebrox and the PM too. However I cannot in all conscience advise you use it because of potentially corrosive nature of the chemicals in the stuff. In particular I haven't found any men...

Re: Intermittent Bios Battery Problem - solved
I was about to replace the machine when I read somewhere that the cmos battery relies on the heat-shrink insulation to make the connection. Just for the record: it doesn't . The leads to the battery are spot welded on the battery. The insulation is just that: insulation, and serves no other purpose...

Re: BIOS time resets to 1985 when battery runs out?
Maybe if I leave the laptop with flat battery for 16 hours odd then try booting. Why would you do that? If the CMOS battery is low or dead, it has to be replaced. All it is is a CR2025 or CR2032 cell in a holder - I pull off the metal straps welded onto the battery as contacts with pliers and use p...

The simplest, easiest and cheapest (no charge) way to post image is http://imageshack.us/. Use the thumbnails and everyone can see what you're talking about.I've got the pics of it, but had to join photobucket, or one of those programs, so I can load them up on the forum.

[Thanks, no further need] WTB: Working T41p-T42p Mainboard
I meanwhile have two T40s, one T41p and one T42p and all have the "usual" graphics chip defect on the mainboard. Attempts to fix this (heat treatment) have been failures - I have no idea why some people apparently have more positive experience - and so I want to buy a WORKING mainboard (only the mai...

Re: T40 REBUILD
I don't follow your suggestion, I would need to install a harddrive + os , is this correct? No, Virge referred to the possibility that your T40 has a "flexed" mainboard, with the BGA (ball grid array) graphics chip no longer properly attached to the contacts on the board. You can check for this jus...

Re: A20m upgrading, is it worth it?
And even if you do upgrade to maximum RAM you'll find that this generation of systems can't run WinXP and modern applications like web browsers at reasonable speeds. You know, you don't really need 4 GB of RAM to run WinXP and a browser, even if some now think this is the absolute minimum. The A2x ...

Re: Buying X200s in the USA
Things have definitely changed from a few years ago. Foreign credit card number together with a ship to address that is in a different continent than billing definitely sets a red flag nowadays. Shopping in EU might be different but US vendors are now on high alert on these things. Why? From what I...

I can appreciate why this, and it's a rule and as such I respect it, but I have to say - certain events transpired with my own T20 recently which resulted in the supervisor password being removed from the machine, and I was absolutely aghast at how simply this was achieved! I think there's a case f...

Another post (from vlyne) indicated that there's too much of a gap between the CPU and the fan to leave out the foam pad. Are you suggesting otherwise? I'd have to look at the heatsink and the CPU die to know for sure, but I believe the fan/heatsink is pressed down on the CPU die with springs and t...

I finally had a little time to do this over the weekend. I removed the fan. The original thermal pad was intact...made of a weird rubbery compound...I've never seen one like that before. The pad lifted right off with no residue. I cleaned the cpu and fan with alcohol, and applied some fresh thermal...

The biggest problem replacing a CMOS battery in these models is to get the tiny plug properly set on the two mainboard pins hidden underneath the base. Not much problem getting the battery out. but replacing it is not the easiest thing to do. I generally use a strong light, a dental mirror and a sma...

I set ALL the passwords. For the average thief, the fact that they get the purloined goods home and are confronted with a PW prompt when attempting to turn it on is usually sufficient for them to feel "cheated". If they make a concerted effort and search the internet for ways to remove a power on P...

Seems to me you have one of two possible problems: either the CPU is overheating (in that case remove the fan, make sure it operates correctly, and reinstall with fresh thermal paste), or you have the "BOD" (blink of death) problem - the computer LEDs only blink briefly when the power button is push...
