Re: Win7 impression ??

Thanks for the Seach tip, I'll try and start using that. Problem currently is constantly switching between multiple systems either at work or home and using different techniques on each. I do like the jump lists from the pinned items and that is, for me, the only real benefit. My problem with the pi...

Re: Win7 impression ??

Long time NT4/W2K user who was running XP Pro until last weekend on my T30. Upgraded my RAM from 768Mb to 2GB. Installed a WD Scorpio 250GB drive and did an upgrade install of Windows 7 Professional on the machine. I knew the graphics would be basic but I only really wanted to test drive Windows 7 P...

Re: T30 HD 40Gb ATA death and upgrading

I've been thorugh a number of hard drive upgrades for my T30, most recently a WD Scorpio 250GB last weekend, to enable me to do an upgrade install of Windows 7 over my XP system. I just backed up my system partition with Acronis True Image, swapped the drives over and then did a stand-alone restore ...

Re: IBM Rapid Restore on new HDD

I heard you cannot have a partition over 120 GB on XP natively?

Not true.
I've had many XP configurations with a partition over that size.

Re: backup system

I've haven't looked at what Windows 7 itself offers. From using ntbackup years ago I suspect it's not going to be better than what I currently do. Traditionally the big problem with ntbackup was the stand-alone restore, which was clumsy. All products like Paragon and Acronis use a simple boot disk (...

Slightly different situation here as my desktop is my main machine and I use the Thinkpad as a hot spare/test machine for it, but the backup methodolgy works just as well. Re: system migration tool for upgrade from vista to windows 7?

It somewhat depends on how your system is currently organised. Ever since NT4, I've always partitioned my systems so C: contains only the OS and installed programs and D: has ALL my user data. I've just installed Windows 7 Professsional on my T30 and I was just able to restore all the contents of D:...

I already do something similar to that on XP. I've got a DOS batch file that fires off a search request to an Outlook folder so I can see which bills are due this month and that haven't been paid :o As a temporary measure on W7 while I'm testing, I've set up a Library that includes just my PDF and W...

Windows Search

Over the weekend I installed Windows 7 Professional on my old T30. I upgraded the RAM to 2GB and installed a 250GB WD Scorpio drive. This machine is now only used as a backup/test machine for my desktop and I thought it was worth trying out W7 on the T30 before I attempted any migration on the deskt...

Go with XP.
It is supported until 2014 and has far greater device support.

Moreover, as JDHurst said, configure it for performance and set Classic Windows. In that mode it looks and feels exactly like W2K.

Sound advice.

My T30 is now only used as a backup/test machine. Should my desktop fail and I cannot recover it quickly, then I would switch to the ThinkPad. Furthermore, I regularly use it to try out changes to Windows etc, so I don't use Factory Restore but need my current system restored.

I don't plan to use Factory Restore and have deleted the hidden partition. I keep RnR up-to-date as that's my software philosophy. I only use it now for add-hoc (perhaps once a month) backups. I would say that for most people, Acronis True Image is a much superior product and indeed, that's what I u...

In my experience, RnR has a compression ratio of about 2:1. Using this, you should be able to work out how much space you need to hold the required number of full backups you wish to save. Don't forget you can also do incremental backups with RnR so you may wish to take one full backup and then any ...

HPA is the so called hidden partition which RnR can use to restore your system to its factory default, ie as initially shipped. To me this is pointless, as if I wish to restore my system I need the latest copy of it, not, as in my case, a 5 year old version of it  One of the first things I di...

GOTCHA - Intel Application Accelerator V2.2 and HDD upgrade

With the impending demise of 2.5" PATA production (Hitachi having already stopped), I decided to upgrade the disk on my (over 5 year old) T30. This machine is now used as a "hot spare" for my desktop, should that run into trouble. It wasn't worth buying a 250GB WD Scorpio but a 160GB Seagate Momentu...

The other aspect for Acronis is that you can extract individual files and folders, which I gather R&R will not let you do, or certainly wouldn't last time I tried it a few years ago You've been able to recover individual files from an RnR backup for some time. I've successfully done this with both ...

Yep, same problem here.

It certainly affects ZoneAlarm, who are currently looking into the problem.
Recommendation from them is either,
a) Remove the fix
b) Leave the fix applied but run with Internet security level set to medium in ZA.

Don't know if any other Firewalls are affected.
