I installed Kalyway 10.5.1 on my X61s and it works in certain apps. Firefox and OpenOffice. Nothing native like Finder. However, in Firefox it acts like a wheel-click ... it will let you scroll vertically and horizontally. It took some getting used to since I was accustomed to the vertical-only beha...

I just installed Kalyway 10.5.1 (dual-boot with XP -- that was a pain). It can be tough if you don't do things exactly right. My advice: download and burn a GParted Live CD. It will help you set partitions active quickly when you are having boot trouble. I believe there might be a new driver out the...

Exactly. LCDs do not need high refresh rates because they do not dim between cycles like CRTs do. You only need a sufficiently high refresh rate to achieve smooth video, and 50 Hz is enough for that.

Well, then let me ask you please, how noisy/silent is your x61s under windows? My X61s under WinXP is virtually silent. In almost all cases lower than the ambient noise in the room. The occasionally whine from the disk drive or if you are really taxing it, the soft rush of the fan hitting high RPM....

This is independent of the OS. This is not a problem in Windows XP or Vista. Fan control works. This is either a problem with the distros you used and their implementation of ACPI or with your specific ThinkPad. Are you allowing any throttling down of the CPU? With the CPU under heavy load at top s...

During startup, are there any long periods where there is no hard disk activity? (Watch the LED.) This is often typical of DHCP delays, which can affect both wired and wireless connections. If so, assign the connection a static IP address within the same subnet as your router/modem.

you know it's funny that people say DWM and AERO uses so much power. It's not like when you turn off AERO it goes back to GDI or something. Vista Classic is still generated by the GPU. Surely the GPU works a lil more to do all the effects and transparencies but it's not like it's 2% vs 80% usage. T...

Windows may be having difficulty obtaining an IP address via DHCP at boot time and keeps trying for several minutes before it succeeds. Use a wired Ethernet connection and see if the startup is faster. I've seen this a significant delay on startup time before. A more direct solution is to manually ...

Re: Recovery Disc

I received my set of recovery cd's and very easily switched from Vista to Xp. I would like to revert back to Vista at a later date so did not want to erase the hidden partition when restoring Xp. I ordered an identical drive from Lenovo and installed the recovery set directly to the new drive. Had ...

I just realized I got mine not from Newegg, but from ConsumerDepot. They are an overstock company, so things go in and out of stock.

In my opinion, these drives are pretty interchangeable and often have the same guts inside. Watch newegg or pricegrabber and grab one when they go below $50.

$250! Wow. Just go to newegg.com and sort by price. I got an IOMagic one for $40 and it can't be any bigger than the lenovo one. No Lightscribe, but it burns dual-layer DVDs.

Just a question: So if we found a 2.5in SSD SATA drive we would be able to replace the current HD on the x6x models and run off of the SSD instead? So it would be internally cased in the unit? Yup. The interface between the hard drive and the motherboard is the same. The motherboard doesn't care if...

The Portege R500 is not out yet, so it's just pre-orders. If someone is offering a good price already it's probably a scam.

The 64GB NAND drive is a Samsung SSD, it should be in production but I don't think it has shipped yet.

Question about wires inside X61s (upgrading wireless)

I saved $45 by downgrading from the Intel 4965AGN to the Thinkpad 11a/b/g wireless. In posts on this forum, however, a number of people claim that the Intel 4965AGN uses less power and thus generates less heat in the right palm rest area. But I've also read here that the Thinkpad card gets better re...
