To close off this thread, it turned out that my IT department imaged the drive with the company software before they gave it to me. It appears that the software in the image, which I presume was designed for the T4x series, does not support dual cores. (Apparently something to do with the HAL.) Now ...

T60 hard drive upgrade
I have one of the original T60s with a 100 gb 5400 rpm drive. I find it very slow. Any suggestions for a new 100gb drive (probably 7200 rpm) that might speed things up?
Power consumption and noise, of course, are considerations but I am really looking for speed.

Thanks for the responses. As I suspected, I do have a problem. To DAH, thanks for posting your CPU-Z screenshot. I do not see what you see. My T60 (Model 2623D3U with a Core Duo T2500) shows only one core in CPU-Z. The BIOS (2.16) is the most recent one posted on the Lenovo support page and is enabled for a dual core.
