Software Installer offers "ThinkVantage Rescue and Reco

Recently I noticed the installer offers a ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery, is it an update/replacement for existing IBM Rapid Restore Ultra 4.0 ? I'm still a bit confused what difference is between "IBM Rapid Restore" and "IBM Rescue and Recovery". The update has about 240MB.

Major difference is that R52 no longer have FlexView SXGA+ displays. Otherwise the performance is nearly the same.

Update Connector is obsolete (and never worked for me). Software Installer replaces it (and works). System Update - never heard about it, don't you mean Windows Update ?

Protecting mechanical damage of USB connector by USB hub ?

I'm thinking of two ports hub without external power for ThinkPad R51. Local store has this model (ATEN UH-102) http://www.aten.com/products/productItem.php?pcid=20050107104554001&psid=20050117103438002&pid=20050225162425005 only. Are there any experiences with it ? My reason for the hub is that I f...

FlexView displays are no longer available in R series (the latest one was R51). There are also disadvantages, it is slower and black background color does not look black from the side view. 15" SXGA+ displays are FlexView as well.

Is it an XGA display ? It looks like the quality of LCD panels used in ThinkPads is going permanently down. I've seen a T42 (XGA) recently and couldn't believe that there are such horrible displays in T series (very poor view angle, low contrast, bad colors ...). I could comapre it with Fujistu-Siem...

Have you tried to change color depth (from 32 to 16 bit) ? Looks like damaged video memory. In any case you should send it to the service.

Can NTFS compression speed up slow notebook HDDs ?

Do you have experience with NTFS compression regarding speeding up loading large files. Typically virtual disk files of virtual machines like Microsoft Virtual PC or VMware ? My configuration is 4200 rpm HDD and 1.6 GHz Dothan.

It seems as there are different LCD SXGA+ panels used in various R52 models. One of them is supposed to be something like sony x-black, with high contrast and glass-like screen.

Ghosting is problem of every LCD display. I've seen R50 (XGA only) panels and they were lacking contrast and view angle comparing to my R51 (with FlexView). On the other hand R52 have (finally !) 5400rpm HDD.

Software installer no longer offers some older updates ?

Last week I noticed there were some software updates for my R51, in particular new ATI video driver or WinDVD player update. I didn't downalod them that time. Today I run the installer again but these two updates were no longer listed. It is normal ? I have version 3.12.0506

XP SP2 error in svchost.exe during shutdown

Anyone has encountered an error in SVCHOST.EXE during shutdown which is reported lately on next startup ? It happens from time to time since february when I updated IBM APS software. It also seems to be related to Microsoft KB873333 update http://forum.iamnotageek.com/history/topic.php/1819062255-1....

New R52 models - no longer FlexView displays ?

I've noticed there are no R52 models with 15" SXGA+ FlexView displays listed on IBM site. There was at least one R51 model with such display recently.
