'Kernel memory leaking' Intel processor design flaw forces Linux, Windows redesign

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/01/02/intel_cpu_design_flaw/ A fundamental design flaw in Intel's processor chips has forced a significant redesign of the Linux and Windows kernels to defang the chip-level security bug. Crucially, these updates to both Linux and Windows will incur a performance h...

ThinkPad 13 seems to be replaced by L380. Othwerwise I don't expect anything positive. Just ordinary laptops similar to HP, Dell, Acer ... no single attempt to be the ThinkPad.

No, it does not work for last post in the thread. It looks like that right after I posted it. It looks like the [X] button is enabled in this forum only but not in the others.

Re: Anyone else ditching the Thinkpad?!

The X31 layout is awkward indeed, simply because the keys are smaller, more cramped and a little offset. I feel this myself. For me, having smaller hands, the X31 is the best laptop keyboard ever. Layout, mechanics, colors ... everything perfect. A 12" 3:2 laptop having such keyboard would be a win...

Re: Anyone else ditching the Thinkpad?!

My next "ThinkPad" will be small desktop PC. Just waiting for AMD Ryzen with integrated GPU. Currently I use my X220 in dock most of the time anyway. As for possible laptop, I am waiting for Intel 8th Gen refresh of Huawei MateBook X . Or get the 7th Gen if there will be an interesting discount (cur...

Re: Lenovo’s upcoming non-ThinkPad business laptop leaked

Would IT departments of large companies object to purchasing trackpoint-less laptops in the future? I'd expect it because: MacBook doesn't have it People want bigger touchpad People don't like the trackpoint on the keyboard Removing can save at least $1 and can be promoted as innovation Note that t...

Wrong but that's never stopped you before.
If you know a large company that use ThinkPads (there are very few of them now over there) check how many people actually use trackpoint. It'll give you the answer.

Re: Lenovo’s upcoming non-ThinkPad business laptop leaked

Yes, that is a very relevant question. How does Lenovo consider a clickpad to be more business-like? By cloning other vendor's features and removing unique ThinkPad ones. Do competition has ThinkLight? No, we remove it. Do competition has useable keyboard layout? No, we break it. Do competition has...

Re: Dell is charging $20 to let you disable Intel’s flawed Management Engine

Every piece of software/firmware ever written is buggy. Intel AMT is a rather complicated one as well. And Intel always works actively to fix AMT/ME bugs as they are discovered. It took them 7 years to fix well-known bug latety. Yes, it is complicated, that's why it makes sense to offer an option t...

As the ThinkPad 2013 generation and the buttonless TrackPad showed, things are a little bit more complicated than that. There are still enough customers who want a TrackPoint, thankfully.
There were also a lot of them who wanted a real keyboard.

Re: Lenovo’s upcoming non-ThinkPad business laptop leaked

Not sure whether Lenovo 3000 was targeted to (small) business. I think it was rather Edge that has trackpoint. As for removing trackpoint from ThinkPad, we already know Lenovo can do it, if it saves $1 and won't affect sales in total. The number of current ThinkPad corporate customers who prefer tra...
