It is does refers to the much longer PART'S SERIAL NUMBER that you found it in.
Really? You've never seen a SERIAL NUMBER or production code on a part before?

Re: T61 falling apart - what now ?
Actually...I've got a spare T61P, I bought it off-lease last year so I could just swap drives and keep using my installation, while figuring out how to fix my own 5 year old T61P. Since that's both fixed and replaced...I've got a really clean T61P with licensed XP installation on it. If anyone wants...

Re: Reviving Thinkpad batteries
joester, you said "I don't believe there data stored in the battery." and I responded to that. Whether power is needed to maintain the data is a different issue, but static memory (flash, eeprom, whatever) is so cheap that's a non-issue. Either way the logic can be set to "never use this device agai...

Re: Reviving Thinkpad batteries
The power manager software does read some data that is stored in the battery pack. If you unintuitively scroll the screen down "below the fold" you will find the power manager knows each battery pack by serial number, maker, and other information that is stored in the pack. I have no idea what else ...

pep- You may enjoy this. I couldn't update the power manager using the System Update tool, which opened and then closed. And here I am using 6.32 (quick, squint at the tiny print before it flies away) and the update nags haven't told me it was obsolete yet. Re: Splicing two Power Adapters
Dunno, jc. I had my old 90W adapter plugged in for a good hour or longer, and the battery stayed at 99% and no message came up until after I suspended and resumed the system some time later. Battery was still at 99%, where it usually is. But I also know the power manager software on this computer is...

Re: Reviving Thinkpad batteries
This is part of the mystery of lithium battery controllers. The controller will normally cut off power form the pack if the combined voltage from the pack falls below a certain point, to prevent cell damage. It could well be that if the controller sees any one cell drop below the minimum cell voltag...

Anytime I try to make a change in the Power Manager software, like set the lid closing to sleep the computer, I make the change, click APPLY, click OK, the Power Manager closes and then neatly ignores the changes. Re: How's the W520 screen compared to a T60p?
Recently went from an older T61P to a W530 and the new machine with LED screen is rated at literally twice the brightness of the old one. So even allowing for new screen vs. old used screen? There's a huge difference, the new screens are much brighter. (Both 1920, top resolution.) I don't like the f...

Re: Splicing two Power Adapters
"I connected the two bricks together and used diodes to isolate the supplies from each other. The combined output is detected by the laptop and charges, but SLOWLY. " That is to be expected, since even the finest low-loss diodes would probably drop the voltage about .3V from each supply, and the low...

Re: T61 falling apart - what now ?
My T61P had occasional problems but nowhere near what the OP had. I'd call it typical of most laptops in quality. An HP Elitebook series might be more robust, that's how they are sold and some have metal bodies instead of plastic, which might also help. HP quality even on the consumer machines seems...

Re: Reviving Thinkpad batteries
Ash- There are several different "lithium" chemistries and each has slightly different voltage requirements, so you might want to carefully match whatever was in the original packs. But if you get the capacities mismatched, or there's a problem in the charging rates, or you solder any connections an...

Color Calibrator can't count to four?
I'm using a W530 running Win7/64 and no matter how often I tell the color calibrator to nag me just once a month, it nags me every week. It just can't seem to count to FOUR weeks between nags. Has anyone else had this problem or found a fix for it?

Re: W520 requires 170W AC adapter
I have no idea what the cooktops are here. Many of us use gas (piped natural gas) ranges in the cities and electric cooktops are considered a deprivation that folks in worse buildings have to put up with. Whatever the amperage draw of vacuum cleaners is, they generally work without problems too. Hig...

"A 11.1 KW cooktop can be easily connected. How does one connect such a thing in the US? " Apartments, older "prewar" meaning WW2 apartments, might have 50A service. Re: W520 requires 170W AC adapter
"Yes, wire resistance will be pretty small, but so what? It will be even smaller with a higher voltage. It would be higher if they used 12 Volt. " Again, irrelevant. You don't rate a power supply by the voltage at the brick, you rate it by the voltage delivered at the connector, under load. The wire...

Re: W520 requires 170W AC adapter
"That's easy. 170 Watts in 12 Volts gives over 14 Amps; in 20 V it's just 8.5" Which is meaningless, since that's a measure of power that cannot be used. The computer requires a set maximum voltage, anything above that is NOT delivered as extra power, it is simply dumped as heat, or left unused, dep...

Coming upon this late, and even (sssh!) with a W530...That's some great sleuthing, guys. Need W530 power plug
Does anyone know where I can get a couple of W530 power plugs from? I have some perfectly adequate power supplies that use conventional "coaxial" power plugs, but the two notches in this one make it special. Simpler for me to change the plugs than to buy new power supplies. Unless the W530 can be mo...

I've been having the same problem on two T61P's. One running Vista Ultimate fully updated, the other Windows7 fully updated, both 32 bit. Every month or so I take anothe whack at it, never any joy. And I just tried the automount commands on the Win7 machine. The "scrub" parameter is curiously undocu...

Thanks for the pointers! I won't say it was painless, but I did the Middleton BIOS upgrade. I downloaded the files on one machine, burned an ISO CD that should have been self-booting. Booted the "victim" from that CD and was told the existing BIOS was locked out from LAN updates. Hmm, OK, the CD dri...

Re: T61P CPU swap?
The 6459 is 07/12, 2GHz CPU.
The 6458 is 08/05, 2.6GHz CPU.
So if the 6459 (not accesible right now) shows a 7xxx series CPU, it would need a BIOS update. Yes?

Right, but I was hoping to read that info from Windows, without going into the BIOS or disassembling the computer.
I'll poke around and find something to do that.
Found one at Intel, which says the 2.6G CPU is a T9500 series.

Thanks, Neil. Somehow I never stumbled across that manual before. It looks like the CPU is in a standard ZIF socket with just one lock screw to hold it in.

T61P CPU swap?
How hard is it, or is it possible, to swap out the CPUs on a T61P? I ask because my 6459 has the "base" 2GHz CPU, and while it was in hospital (so to speak) I picked up a 6458 with a 2.6GHz CPU, which I was thinking of swapping into the "better but slower" machine before I sold one off. (Won't need ...
