Re: And another reason to avoid Micro$haft's W10

There is a lot of bad software out there, in all sorts of expensive vertically integrated packages (like hospital and medical) that was probably written by Chinese high school students on summer break in computer camp. And if you have bugs, yes yes no problem wait June next year we all fix. The IT g...

Re: And another reason to avoid Micro$haft's W10

Even in desktops, I can't say they dropped the ball because I'm not sure they ever had it. In the late 90's someone asked me to spec a small network with cheap systems for most of the desks, but "something better" for a couple of the officers. I found some IBM workstations on clearance that blew the...

Done that.(G) If I didn't have a clone to fall back on, I'd be royally helixed. One of the "solutions" from MS got all the way to rebooting, and then announced there was no bootable OS on the computer. And of course, W10 disables the Lenono F-key boot options, so I couldn't even boot from USB media ...

"identified as NT6.4; at some point they changed it to 10.0." Very interesting. Personally, I didn't find a lot of change from Vista to 7. Very interesting. I'd have to go back and look again, but I'm suspecting that the machine they offer at greaet prices, are the higher speed memory chips with the WWAN conflicts--which is why they didn't bundle the two.

"If you're paranoid about security, you should be running away from the entire Windows realm IMO." Opinions are like elbows, everyone is entitled to have one. Nice to find that out. But "not tested" is like not being on the HQL. It doesn't mean something doesn't work--it just means it hasn't been tested. And note that it HAS been tested for 1607, which won't install here either. One MS tech said that's the key, I have to install 1607 before 1703 can insta...

San- Want the t-shirt? BTDT, and it still fails. I think that was the creative error message that said Win10 couldn't be installed on my computer. Despite the fact that it was already here. Run through four very long remote access sessions with MS techs, they all knew how to fix it. Yeah, that's why...

Ada, if you are not aware of it, normal support for Windows7 ended two years ago. Extended support--a period when critical security and other matters will sometimes be addressed--ends in January of 2020. So one reason to move on from Windows7, is that anything less than critical support will not hap...

Upgrading a new P50?

While I was looking at options to replace my cranky W530, I priced up a P51 and was amazed at how quickly it added up. But I see the remaining P50 stock, with limited choices, is very attractively priced. Except, I need the backlight keyboard (just believe me) and there are none left in stock. Does ...

Xeon versus i7 in P51?

I'm a little out of date on processors so I'm looking for some current hard information. The Xeon's are workstation and server processors. "The problem is that some hardware that may be running 1607 suddenly "cannot run" 1703." And some of us are stuck on v.1511 and can't upgrade it. Stuck in Win10 ver. 1511

I upgraded from Win7/64 Pro, which shiped on my W530, to Win10 close to the free cut-off date. And manually updated every couple of weeks after that, or so I thought. Now a couple of weeks ago I try to download and install the Creators Update, and it refuses to run. Varying error messages and online...

Re: My T61 Died need Expert Suggestions to buy a 2nd durble user friendly uprgadeable powerful Ibm Lenovo Laptop

When my T61p threw fits, I replaced it with a W530 and in theory a better internal WiFi card. But times change, an older machine often has crappy WiFi at best. So for $15 I picked up a 8"(?) long dual-band USB/WiFi stick. Throughput and range both went up tremendously. Yes, I'd prefer an invisible i...

If the OP is still looking... I gave up on Seagate after more than one too many DOA's. And a recent "died on the shelf" WD drive has made me question what's going on there too. I think the hard drive industry has seen too much financial pressure and the coming of SSDs to replace them. Seagate's retu...

What do you call the sheet metal "shield" that screws onto a hard drive which is then placed in the computer or in the drive sled? The little piece of sheet metal that attaches with four screws and gets capped with two rubber "bumpers" along the sides of the drive? And once I know the right name for...

I'm trying to ensure the service is deleted from the startups, using MSCONFIG. That has no bearing on how the service is "shown" when it is running. Funny that there's nothing in the startup, or the registry, that is more obviously running that task.
Is there some new way things can get run in Windows, or is this just the way services are invisibly (not)working?

"8 chips plus one chip of extra 8 bits " That would still mean they are using 9 bits instead of 8, adding 8 correction bits to eight, 8-bit sticks. A difference physically which would probably allow for using one type of stick instead of two, or for turning off the use of the extra correction memory...

Re: T420 16gb RAM success stories? Will ECC (or "registered") work?

Some of the laptops, that are designated as "laptop workstations" and have the optional Xeon CPU's installed, will definitely make use of ECC memory, since the Xeon normally uses ECC and is designed as a workstation (read: server) rather than a desktop. Presumably, if the T420 had that option, the B...
