viney,
Off topic, but I have this unit, I received from the original owner, it sat up in a box for about 4 years. http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=68892
We are close. According to these forums, some say this mobo will take up to a PIII 550MHz CPU.
Good luck.

Steve,
Seems like the hard drive may be dead. Try booting into DOS and run a hard disk diagnostics utility to check the status of the drive.

I received an old ThinkPad 770X recently. I was getting the 163/173 error codes at boot-up, also. I replaced the CR-2025 Lithium 3volt CMOS battery (in the memory area on the bottom of the laptop), rebooted it, set the time/date/OK, and it boots up fine now. Try replacing the CMOS battery. Good luck...

IMHO, if you added the power adapter, and the 512MB RAM, maybe you could sell it, even though it has no hard drive, and no OS.

Sounds like you originally had a 'heat/fan' issue, or a bad CMOS battery.
It looks really good.
Good luck.

Keyhole, Yes, homework is crucial. I only made that mistake once, but was able to resale the 256MB Samsung PC100 'high-density' SODIMM to a customer for what I paid for it. Never, ever, guess at RAM specs. It will always bite you in the bohunkus! My ThinkPad 770x uses PC66, it also runs PC100 and PC...

Harryc,
I thought about installing 2 x 256MB SODIMMS, but I have to keep my costs down. So, I think this is about all I'm going to do to this unit.
It works pristine.

fje, I had the same problem; I ordered a 256MB SODIMM, thinking it was "low-density" and it turned out to be "high-density", therefore giving the pops at startup. The laptop recognizes the RAM, then makes about 10-12 pops, then stops COLD! That RAM will definitely not work in your laptop. See my pos...

I solved the DVD-ROM problem by totally restoring the system. Now the DVD-ROM drives works like new. I also added a 256MB PC100 SODIMM in the #2 available slot. Now the total RAM is 384MB. That's 64MB PC66 onboard, with 64MB PC66 in #1 slot, and 256MB PC100 in #2 slot. It runs much faster. The 256MB...
