I've had that noise while charging the battery of my old x41 when I lost my AC adapter and had to use one from an old T40 series. So that may be all it was. I think the voltage was different.

Not sure what constitutes as removing everything without removing too much, but I removed the battery, the hard drive, the PCI card, the Daughter card and the RAM.
