Personally I think that the Toshiba is the best one. I've upgraded a couple of XGAs to that SXGA model and it seems reasonably bright.

Unfortunately the hinge width of a 4:3 T61 is wider than the corresponding width on a 4:3 T60, so I don't think you can just swap the lids.

You can get a 4965 n-enabled card off e-bay for about $ 25. Interestingly, the 14.1 4:3 form-factor T61s that I've opened up already have the 3rd antenna wire installed so its just a matter of switching the cards and connecting the wires.

Well if I was gonna carry something around in a backpack on a bike much of the time I'd want something small and light - certainly no larger than a 14 in T60 or T61. If the backpack gets tossed into a car most of the time, you could consider something bigger.

I write a lot of code and I personally prefer SXGA+ (1400x1050 pixels) over XGA (1024x768 pixels) The SXGA+ has almost 300 pixels more in the vertical direction than the XGA display so you get to see quite a bit more text in the vertical direction.

You do NOT have to hack the bios - the 42T0865 will work just fine with a standard T61. Your T61 probably already has the third antenna wire lying around disconnected to anything. I know nothing about linux mint but I've experienced a similar problem with ubuntu - where the default X-win drivers wouldn't work with the GPU chip of the computer on which I was trying to do the install. Switching to a 'more primitive?' text-based install got things going.

You can get a wireless n card that will work directly with a T60 without doing any bios mods whatsoever. Its an atheros card - FRU 42T0825 (if I remember correctly). My T60 with win XP claims 300 Mbs connectivity - I don't know if things are really running that fast or not ...
