41C, I have seen those, always wanted one. I make good due with the 11C as it is one of the best pocket advanced scientific and engineering calculators I have ever come across. Now I see what the HP12 Gold is still popular as a business/financial calculator, it is a powerful system in a slim case. ...

I drive a '97 Audi A4 that turns 10 years old in December. I love it just as much now as the day I bought it new. I sold mine 2 1/2 years ago ... an autumn red (great colour!) A4 1.8T quattro with the great sport seats, 17" BBS wheels and an APR chip to take it up to about 190 hp. The original A4 d...

Re: Seagate vs. Hitachi for T42

I've got a T42 2378-FVU, and I am looking to upgrade the 40GB HDD that came with the machine (Fujitsu). I've read a lot of threads that recommend the 7k100 from Hitachi, and I'd like to get a 100GB drive. I've seen some reviews that say that the Hitachi are a bit loud. Can anyone comment on the noi...

This survey seems to based on the number of trouble calls corrected for manufacturer market share. I'm sure the fact that Dell and other companies produce many entry-level models that are marketed and sold to the inexperienced home user affects the survey numbers greatly. Many or most of Lenovo/IBM'...

Here is another thread on this subject that I remembered reading. http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=25154 Thanks for the link. I hadn't come across that thread in my searching. Sounds like they moved production of the NMB keyboards to China, and they are close in quality, but perhaps not q...

Keyboard replacement question

I needed a replacement keyboard for my newly acquired T42, since the trackpoint buttons worked poorly. When I contacted Lenovo to order one (under warranty), I specifically requested the NMB keyboard and was told that was what I was getting. From reading multiple threads around here about the keyboa...

Mike and Mike on ESPN2 (sports talk show) did their show from the New York studios on Friday. They both had ThinkPads in front of them very prominently, appeared to be T4x models. Couldn't miss the Thinkpad logos.

I just had a tech out to replace the LCD on my T42. Well, actually I had 2 techs out since the first guy screwed it up. From seeing everything those guys went through it seems like a pretty ambitious undertaking. There are all sorts of clips and wires snaking throughout the whole assembly that are p...

New tech came out today and his competence was immediately evident. He was obviously disgusted when he saw what the previous guy had done. He said he had no idea what the first guy was doing and that he shouldn't be allowed to work on laptops anymore. :) He was quick & thorough and had to redo every...

So I specifically requested the Thai keyboard (and part #) and was told that is what I would get. In fact he said they had about 1400 of them in stock. My new keyboard arrived but it was the chinese model from the T43. :( I called to ask about it and they said that they had none of the Thai...

While I was talking to the Support guy today about my service tech issues, I went ahead and requested another keyboard for my T42. I contacted Lenovo Support today and they will be sending out another tech to fix the first guy's errors. I requested that they send a different tech, although I wasn't confident that they have a good mechanism for ensuring I get a different guy. Hopefully they don't send the same guy out to fix his...

I'd call and tell them the whole story, then when the next guy comes out give him the laptop and go have some coffee and don't stand there and watch. I'm a service tech and it always makes me way more nervous if someone is standing there watching me and/or trying to make distracting small talk, ask...

Not pleased with on-site service visit

I had a service tech at my house today to fix the screen on my T42 (red tint problem). It was covered under the 3-year on-site warranty. He wound up replacing the screen, inverter and cable assembly. He seemed to have some troubles re-assembling the computer, but I chalked it up to the fidgety natur...

Thanks Christopher. I'll make sure I run it through it's paces before he leaves. Are there different part numbers for different manufacturers, or do I just get what ...

Just bought a T42 - advice on warranty screen replacement?

I just picked up a T42 of off eBay (yay!). I've been using my old 600x for the past year since I had to return my beloved T40 to my previous employer, and I was ready for an upgrade. Here's what I got for $650 plus shipping: T42 (2378-FVU) Pentium M 1.7GHz, 14.1" SXGA+, 768MB RAM, 40GB HD, 64 MB Rad...

I also have the chance to pick up at Z60t (2511-FEU) used for a good price. I've used a T40 previously and was considering going for a different deal on a T42 (2378-FVU) with the 14.1 SXGA+ screen. My use is standard office apps and web surfing, and some occasional light graphics and video work. I'm...

IIRC, PC Doctor is just a DOS program, so any old DOS bootable CD with a CD-ROM driver should let you run the program. I tried that, but unfortunately it appears that it needs to unpack it's diagnostics to the floppy to run, so it has problems running from a CD since it can't write to the drive. Yo...

You are not using the right part of the manual. The 600 and 600E have Test selections. The 600X does not. Go to the IBM site and get PC Doctor for the 600X. Use that to test your hardware. The maintenance disk can be used to set your system serial number on the system board. Oops...right you are. I...

Get your Hardware Maintenance Manual (see the FAQs on this forum for how to download it from IBM). Go through the checkout procedures. Thanks for the reply. I had already tracked down the manual as well as the maintenance diskette. However, the manual says to select "Test" from the Easy-Setup menu....

Please help, my 600X died!

I have a Thinkpad 600X, model 2645-5FU. A couple of days ago it crashed and now I can't get it working. Upon powering up, I get the graphic of the floppy drive with the arrow telling me to put in a floppy and press F1, but doing so only gets me an error code of I9990305. For some reason, it can't se...
