Re: Old Dell 9300: HD Transfer down 2.5 MB/sec after XP updates?

CPU usage of 99.3% means the drive isn't being used with DMA transfers, should be under 5% in normal use. Most likely a driver issue or the drive is junk (overheated). When you ran HDtune did you check the tab for "health"? The info tab will tell you what drive speed is supported and which is curren...

T40 fan differences

My T40 had a fan error (the fan works on the second try, only fails once in a blue moon) last week so I ordered a used fan off of ebay. When I went to install the fan I noticed the older heatsink had a section that covered the GPU (ATI 9000 in my case) and the replacement doesn't have that so I didn...

Netflix is great if you like to watch the TV shows they have (quite a library) plus movies. Hulu+ isn't as good as netflix to me anyway, and the only reason we keep Dishnetwork is the Greek channel my parents like and my love of HBO, Comedy Central, AMC. With a proper antenna you can pick up all kin...

A30/A31 lids all the same?

I got a nice A30 in today but the top lid cover is scracted up. The unit has a 15" screen and I have an A31 with a 14" screen with a dead MB. Was wondering if the LCD lids are interchangable between the 14 and 15" LCD models?

Check the fan to make sure it is making good contact with the CPU (replacing the heatsink compound might be needed).

Re: How much time and money we spend upgrading our classics.

I have a few bucks tied up in 50+ old thinkpads and upgrades for them. Working batteries for the real old models (that mostly sit on the shelf) can get pricey, but its still a cheap hobby compared to anything else.

Re: I finally joined the SXGA (1280x1024) club!

I think it is (look at that huge filler piece of plastic in front of the trackpad). The 9500 looks different because it doesn't have those buttons in front. Normal 9500 http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/mobile_nvs/9500nv.jpg Most of my collection is made up of Thinkpads but I found a few nice Gate...

Re: I finally joined the SXGA (1280x1024) club!

I have a couple Gateway Solo 9500's that are 1280x1024, nice large screens. The 15.7" option on the 9500/9550 are not that common, the added filler plastic panels to the front on the laptop to make the screen fit (large beasts made for desktop use mostly).

Re: 760ED Hard Drive replacement?

You can find 760 series HD cases (no drive) for very little money on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-ThinkPad-Caddy-760E-760XL-FRU-29H9422-/230709049059 You can then find a working smaller IDE drive or get an IDE to CFA card adapter if needed. The sled itself will have the adapter to standard IDE ...

Re: I never got a T40 series Thinkpad

Video chip issues like video to the LCD is blown but external VGA works fine (have one T30 unit like that). Of the 4 T30's I have only 1 is 100% functional, 1 has the video chip issue (used as a parts machine), and 2 have RAM slot issues (they still work with shims). So while I will eventually get s...

Re: I never got a T40 series Thinkpad

I like T30's (have 4) but they do have video chip issues and RAM slot issues. Still havn't picked up a T40 myself (had a lead on one a while ago but somebody snagged it before I could) but I plan on getting one. As someone else said the T42P is a classic machine. Personally if I could stick a P3-3gh...

I checked the internal connection, there was some corrosion inside the connector on 3-4 pins in the middle. I cleaned it out but nothing changed. Makes me wonder how that got like that. Where is the fuse for internal video at?

A31 no video on LCD

I got an A31 with no video on the LCD (backlight works fine, external video works fine). I checked the video cable on the LCD end and it is in correctly. Is this an issue with the video chip or should I open up the thing and check the cable on the motherboard? I have a T30 with video corruption on t...

SXGA is for the 770x and 770z only (last 2 of the line). Keep the screen and maybe you will find another 770 to use it with in the future.

Re: A22M 2628-P2u Error 0175

Did the swap, all seems fine (if I had a spare HD I could even load the OS). I assume if the video looks ok for the BIOS screen then there is no issue with the video.

Seems like the later A2* series has a heatsink extension from the CPU to the video these two didn't.

Can I replace the A21E (15" LCD) MB with one from an A20M (14" LCD)? I assume the MB's are the same and the case was adjusted in size for the larger screen.

Getting back to the original question of a price check on a T30, I'm going to have to agree with RBS. And only if the prospective buyer really, really wants a T30. At this point, with some eBay skill and patience, you can find nicely equipped Core Duo machines, like T60, R60, Z61 models in the $150...
