Re: Lenovo 9-Cell 99Wh Battery Runtime

Good point but I think I'll go for this upgraded battery since it's only a £15 option if I buy it with the battery, whereas it'd cost me about £100 to buy it separately later on (if I got a genuine Lenovo one direct from their store). I think I'm going to stick to the HD 4600 graphics and I doubt I'...

Re: Should I go with SSD or stay with HDD

Yeah they are getting cheaper. I remember my first SSD which I bought in October 2011 (a 128GB Crucial M4) was £160. You can now get a 256GB Crucial M500 for little over £100 and a 256GB Samsung Evo Basic SSD for about £115, whilst 128GB drives are typically about £70-80. Give it another year or so ...

Winter 2013-14 was far warmer than winter 2012-13 over here in Norfolk, UK. Not had a drop of snow since March 2013. So nice! ;)

Lenovo 9-Cell 99Wh Battery Runtime

How long do you think I would be able to get out of a single charge on this battery with the following spec on a T540p? 1080p display Core i5 4200M 500GB HDD (probably going to upgrade to SSD down the line) Possibly GeForce GT 730M graphics (may stick with HD 4600, not decided) Possibly a backlit ke...

Re: ThinkPads in the movie Gravity

Thought I'd bring this up again. I saw the film tonight (not a bad film at all!) and pretty sure I saw a ThinkPad in a (very) brief scene where the emergency alarms are going off. Couldn't make out exactly which TP it was, but I think it was an IBM one...

Re: Software question: MS Office alternatives

It's an easy choice for me. I use a copy of MS Office 2007 but I won't upgrade it any more. It is so old now that I'd rather use Open Office. Given the choice I'd rather use Office 2007 than OpenOffice at this point in time. Yes, it may be 7 years old now, but it's still functional and 2010 and 201...

Re: New (teen) drivers: training and vehicle discussion

Driving laws and how one qualifies to drive are being standardised across the EU. In general this means tightening up on the skills required to be demonstrated before anyone can obtain a full licence. I prefer it that way. It has reduced accidents within the EU. Whilst on the topic of accidents on ...

many people still expect the same build quality and customer service. They continue to regard computers as premium commodities, regardless of how little money they have spent on them. The amount something costs is relative to how much you earn/have. For some people, spending £300 on a computer is a...

I remember freaking out when I thought I left a T400 on the roof of my car while rushing to work. I remember my Dad leaving a folder full of papers on the roof of his car one evening. He drove off and the papers went everywhere. He didn't realise until he got home and we had to go back and find the...

Re: Should I go with SSD or stay with HDD

Interesting that on almost all tech forums, people talk about HDD as though it's this indestructible infallible technology while SSD will fail if the wind shift 2.4580 degrees the wrong direction. DO NOT trust either, all will fail. Most people will say that SSDs are more reliable than HDDs, and th...

Countless people are constantly looking to buy cheap, used laptops, like the Thinkpad in this video. It should have been either given away or sold to a good home. Re: It's crazy the good stuff people throw away! Computer fi

I've salvaged a lot in my time, but both of my ThinkPads (the A31 and the R40) came from the same guy and he was going to chuck them away. Dad gave them to me. Granted, both of them died after I got them (the R40 several days afterwards - my fault, and the A31 several months - board failure) but I g...

Re: Should I go with SSD or stay with HDD

I've been using SSDs in my desktops since October 2011 and I'd never go back to having a HDD as a primary boot device in my desktops. I've owned a Crucial M4, SanDisk Extreme and an OCZ Vertex 4. All 128GB, but 256GB versions are getting cheaper. Not had any issues with the Vertex 4, though earlier ...

Re: If you've ≥5 computers, do you use them all or feel guil

At various points of my life, I have owned more than 5 computers at once (usually desktops - the only two laptops I've ever owned were the two ThinkPads I had). Didn't really feel 'guilty' as such about owning 5, but I ended up getting rid of them because they were mostly old machines which I had no...

Re: Sony sells its Vaio division

In the last several years, Sony tried to compete by having a few "budget" lines that were 30% to 40% cheaper than their flagship lines, but their quality was clearly subpar, e.g. a $700 budget Sony looked and felt kind of like a $300 HP or Acer. When these laptops sat side by side at Best Buy, ever...

Re: Graphics cards for a lay down desktop?

I've built a few desktops (including my own) with SSDs and they're quick! If you want a fast machine and you're not worried about storage, then get an SSD (and you'll never want to go back to a HDD, believe me!), but if you need space for storage then a larger HDD may be more ideal. I think you mean...

Well another British guy agrees with your friend. Buying the Extreme-end hardware is pointless because it is very expensive for what it is and the lower-end stuff is still very powerful and barely any slower. As I've proven, over time (usually a few years) the Extreme-end hardware ends up being as f...

Except that the i7 4770K is actually a little faster than the 990X in most situations: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/444?vs=836 (lower is better for a lot of these benchmarks). Re: Graphics cards for a lay down desktop?

Because with Sandy-Bridge/Ivy-Bridge, the cost of CPU+Mobo can be more than 50% less for only a 10-15% performance decrease. It may not be as efficient or as techy as Haswell, but it's still featureful and wildly powerful. And for something as old and as cheap as a NetVista... I do understand that ...
