A separate message to report that I've revised the original posting as indicated in the last lines of the revised version.

FS: TP760XL, 802.11b, Ethernet, USB2.0, Modem, Win98, etc.

More or less in order to see whether it could be done, I put together a kind of ultimate ThinkPad 760XL that will probably be better off with someone who can make more real use of it. (I've already got another 760XL working here, and don't really need two.) This is a unit in really excellent conditi...

I tried this method, and I'm afraid it didn't work - Windows refused to cooperate, and reinstalled drives A and B as before. The problem seems to be that the binary data is exactly the same for the two drives - which is not surprising, since there really is only one drive that XP insists on identify...

Ah - I've never tried a USB floppy in XP. The internal 600X floppy certainly doesn't get listed in any system I've looked at!

Ah -- yes, the BIOS will be an interesting question... Will give it a try, though.

Bruce,

Interesting idea - but if I remember correctly, there's no standard floppy cable in the Selectadock III - it uses UltraBay floppy drives only. Or am I misremembering something?

The CD solution seems the best, but I enjoy messing around with the hardware, and it seems that a possible solution will cost about ten US dollars, so I'll try it if I can. The IBM 4869-002 external drive should do the job, and there were quite a few ISA floppy controllers with the external 37-pin i...

Well, the plot is thickening. IBM made an external 1.2 MB floppy for the PS/2 series and others, with the part number IBM 4869-002. This uses a cable with a 37-pin D connector - which apparently connects to a port on many old ISA floppy controllers. I've got a spare ISA slot on my SelectaDock III an...

Unfortunately, I've got more than a hundred old floppies around, and I have no idea when and if I'll need any one of them... But that may be the only solution.

Hmmm... Every Nvidia-based card I've used or tried in the past few years can handle VESA graphics and text modes, but I think only with CRT monitors, not flat panels. Are you using a flat-panel monitor? Also, in Windows XP, you need Nvidia's own drivers, not the driver that ships with XP.

VESA DOS text modes on any T-series?

I still use DOS programs that can use VESA text modes in addition to VESA graphics. Do any ThinkPad T4x models support these? One reason I ask is that I've got a loaner Dell Inspiron (horrible machine) with an ATI Radeon Mobility chip that doesn't support VESA text modes at all, and I expect that th...

External 5.25-inch floppy drive for old ThinkPads?

No one had an answer to this one on the ibm.ibmpc.thinkpad newsgroup, and there may not be any answer at all, but I thought it might be worth asking again here. I'm retiring a desktop system that has a dual 5.25/3.5-inch floppy drive, and its replacement has a BIOS that will only support one floppy ...
