Re: Lenovo 2014 keyboard layout - WARNING !
[quote="GomJabbar"]...Soon, people just won't care if Lenovo's keyboard is part of the package or not. Might not be long and the built-in keyboard will be a thing of the past. If you want a decent keyboard, you will start off with a touchscreen device and add a keyboard as an option - just as my wif...

Re: Lenovo 2014 keyboard layout - WARNING !
I knew the 701c, the 701c was a friend of mine. Lenovo, you are no 701c.... Don't blame the touch train for this. I have a Surface Pro, and a Surface Pro 2, and the Type Cover 2 (while not as good as a T60) is an adequate typing device (this from someone banging this post out on a Das Keyboard). Wit...

Re: Thinkvision LT1423p
The Yoga has almost the same specs as the Surface Pro 2, the Pro has more memory (8Gb). Since I am substituting a Surface Pro 2 for a W520, I believe I have got the new current laptop. I used to run 2 and 3 screens off the W520 as well. Thank you for your input...

Thinkvision LT1423p
Got my LT1423p yesterday, but was this afternoon until I got it unwrapped and connected to my Surface Pro 2. Have to admit, so far I am somewhat underwhelmed.. There is little documentation on the unit. So far there is a sheet of pictures with safety warnings in 23 languages. There is a help file th...

Re: Lenovo has jumped the shark...
Well, actually I did buy Lenovo. I got an LT1421 usb display for a number 2 for my Surface Pro 2. Works exceedingly well, and will probably get the new wireless w/battery version as soon as it actually starts shipping. Sitting in a hotel room with the surface running 3 screens at once. The new type ...

Re: Lenovo has jumped the shark...
Actually, Dell may not get my business either. My current "A" machine is a Surface Pro running Win8.1. While I would like more screen real estate, they fixed the problems with secondary screens with 8.1, so this is now my "go to" machine while traveling. The Haswell versions are available now, altho...

Ok, one would think that they could have taken some of the money for Ashton Kutcher as a design consultant (USATODAY, WSJ, others) and put a better keyboard on the thinkpads, as well as give me my two buttons back.
I will be buying a Dell, as this shows exactly who they are after as customers.

Re: T440p / T540p / W540 / L440 / L540 announcement
Well, this just decided me on a new Surface Pro 2 in 512Gb. My W520 can continue service until I get everything changed over to the Surface, but I see no reason to shell out the money for a sub-average experience on W540. If I need a big, high powered machine I will go with a Dell.

I have seen the future of computing (ok maybe)...
Much as I have anticipated the W540 (can I pleeze PLEEZE have my keyboard back?), I have suffered an epiphany. Thinkpads are SOOOO last week... Spent Sunday running my U2711 (27" monitor) off my Microsoft Surface with a Toshiba dynadock connected via USB3. That allowed me to use my same keyboard, mo...

Re: Getting ready for the long haul with the W520...
Unfortunately, I travel a LOT, so the W520 gets a lot of miles on it. The Surface has replaced my iPad on the road, but in the hotel, I want a real keyboard and a full size screen. The Surface can drive a TV in the room, but it has some quirks I haven't quite worked out yet. I have a good desktop at...

Re: Getting ready for the long haul with the W520...
Not so much worried about equipment failure as I am about keeping it up to current speeds (or at least close). Loose the GPU or CPU (which has happened to me once in about 12 years) and I will just switch to backup unit. I figure I can make it past Haswell with the W520, but by the time Broadwell hi...

Getting ready for the long haul with the W520...
Well, with the dearth of new Thinkpads (that I am interested in) and the probable decline of the T/W series into commodity oblivion, the next question for me is, how long can I be happy with the W520, and what can I do to extend the life of it. My thoughts are, 1) Already running a 250GB SSD, and ru...

Odd WiFi speed issue with W520 and Intel 6205
Did some rework on my incoming bandwidth last week, and after taking Verizon to task for several days, it would appear the problem is with my W520. Using Wifi, I am getting speeds of about 5-900Kb/s off of the new network, but using my desktop, I am getting 4800-6800Kb/s. If I hard connect (cable), ...

Re: Best way to drive 2 1920x1200 displays
I am currently running 2 Dell UltraSharp U2412M along with the W520 screen on a 3 screen setup using the MiniDock plus 3. I have one on a DisplayPort and while I finally got the other DisplayPort cable, the second one is currently running on the VGA port. Even with my new computer glasses, I can't t...

Re: "Most reliable/stable" SSD for W520
I do clone my SSD every month to a 2.5 inch hard drive in case of failure. I also use Lenovo's backup software. I'm confident that I'll be able to recover quickly in case of a SSD failure. While the restoration of my wife's unit was pretty trouble free, it took a long time because of all the progra...

Re: "Most reliable/stable" SSD for W520
I now have a whole pile of bricked, or unreliable SSDs, including 3 different types of Crucial (really early, C300 (2), and M4(2)) and two different types of Corsairs (both X series). None of these were in use in any sort of severe environment, my usage is what I would call fairly pedestrian busines...

Re: "Most reliable/stable" SSD for W520
Just as a datapoint, my wife's M4 rolled over and died this weekend. I have now had failures with every major SSD mfg except Intel, which is why I went back and bought a second 510 250Gb to give me a hot backup on my W520. As for her, she is done with SSDs, and I installed a Momentus XT 750 in her W...

Re: w510 vs 520 experience
I used the W510 for about a year, before switching to the W520. Build quality is identical (at least to me), and the machines look nearly identical. The W520 will leave the W510 gasping in the starting blocks with identically clocked processors, due to the upgraded chipset. By the same token, the ba...

Re: Crucial M4 256GB SSD Install -- Success
Well, the Intel 510 showed up this afternoon, and after deciding I would wait until the weekend to load everything, the M4 just went down hard. The W520 is giving me a 2100 error which means it can see something. Letting it set in BIOS mode for an hour and then try it again. I wasn't doing anything ...

Re: Crucial M4 256GB SSD Install -- Success
Interesting that you're sticking with SSDs after the problems you've had. This certainly isn't an area for the faint-of-heart and risk-averse folks. Will be very interested to see how Intel products work out for you. Well, I have also had problems with platter drives that didn't take trips very wel...

Re: Crucial M4 256GB SSD Install -- Success
I have been running one for a few months, and had my first hiccup yesterday. On restore from sleep, the imm32.dll file was corrupted or erased. This file is used for quite a bit, so there were error messages springing up all over. After cutting a sales trip short and coming back to the office, I was...

Re: SSD Boot Strangeness, W510. Machine or Disk?
Well, some more strangeness to report. The machine will boot up after 4 to 6 attempts with the new drive. If you let it set long enough, it will come back with Boot Device not found HDD0. Cycle power again and it starts up and runs fine. I am thinking i may try getting a spinning disk and see if it ...

SSD Boot Strangeness, W510. Machine or Disk?
When I first got my W510, I moved the 256Gb SSD (Crucial) from my T60p to the W510. After shifting all my old files to a spinning disk with Acronis, I moved the W510 hard drive factory image over to the SSD the same way. There was much happiness, as the T60p with the SSD actually seemed faster than ...

well, a short drop to the floor from below waist high in a case managed to do what i haven't done in three other thinkpads over 7 years. it cracked the corner of the lid. i have my backup unit to switch to, but want to get a new lid before taking this one out into the wild again (also need a better ...

I picked up a second 2623-DDU T60 when I started having problems with my "A" machine, thinking I could just pull the HD and swap...WRONG.
