Re: Time for a "what distro are you running" thread...

On my daily driver my root partition uses 4.2 gb. You can run some systems, like Debian and Arch, on a 4gb disk. Install a 'minimum', or 'bare', or 'core', system and then add only the packages you need. For Debian systems this could mean using the --no-install-recommends switch: apg-get --no-instal...

Re: Serious Computrace Warning!

A firewall on the computrace-infected machine is useless. Low-level spyware, like CT, does not need the OS to communicate over the internet. A firewall placed between the infectred machine and the internet could stop CT's communication, incomming and outgoing, but you would need to know what you're ...

Put in an ssd and measure disk speed. Sata I max is about 135 MB/s. Sata II is about 270 MB/s.

Re: SSD in an X60s - which model will work ?

The intel 330 is six years old. Newer models (520, 530, 535) draw less electricity and have lower latencies. Another way to speed up 'hard drive' performance is to use the hard drive less. Lower the number of disk operations either by off-loading the operations to ram, for example with a ram disk, o...

Re: T420 Running Hot?

You've already gotten the correct screw drivers. But, it's worth mentioning: the key to screw drivers is to have one which fits the screw. If the fit isn't snug, wait to get the correct screw driver. Your probability of stripping a screw is 40x higher if you're using the wrong screw driver -- and st...

Re: T420 or T420s?

The T420s is easier to carry around and thinner. That said, it gets hotter and the fan runs more often. The stock screens of some T420s are terrible. Color calibration helps but you should plan to get a new screen. I don't typically take the T420 or T420s out of the house. The only exception is when...

And how do you think about X62 as jump from X61? My computer work is on Linux doing low cpu-intensive tasks (command line, often on remote machines, coding and reading text on simple web pages). For these tasks there was no difference between the x61s and x62. No difference between the L2400 and th...

Re: What are the pitfalls of an X301?

I tried making the same jump - from the x6xs to an x301. Other options I tried included: x62, x200, x200s, x201, x201s, x220, T420s. The size and weight of the x301 is great. As is the construction. Keyboard has about the same spacing as the x61 - kb on my x301 is a bit too stiff for me. I don't hav...

The L2500, or L2400, x60s is a great little libreboot machine. I use it as my 'daily driver'. It runs much cooler than my l7500 x61s. Look for a picture showing a charging battery - battery light should be green and not orange. Check the screen for mold spots, or whatever that dark dirt is which app...

On my T420 I used i7-3612qm, i7-3630qm and i7-3610qm. Going from the dual core to quad core required switching to a cooler with dual heat pipes going to the cpu. I assume it will be the same with the T430.

Either use the dated version of Palemoon you linked to, or compile it yourself.
The alternatives I use are not full-featured: links2, dillo, lynx, etc.

Battery life difference is most likely negligible, but reception with 6x00 wifi is much better than with 5x00 cards.
Also less heat.
