Re: X6X-series LED backlight conversion kit howtos

If you have one of the old strips with 48 or 51 LEDs that is too bright at step 9. Your driver board might now be putting out way too much power and that cannot be supported at high brightness levels with AC. If that is the case you might be frying your LEDs by using it further. And there is no aut...

Re: X6X-series LED backlight conversion kit howtos

Are you absolutely sure that there are no shorts? Maybe see if the strip works outside the screen? Yes, there was a short! The end of the led strip was touching the screen brace. Now on battery power in xubuntu 14.04 I now get 15 levels! On AC+battery there are about 8 levels. At level 9 of 15 disp...

Re: X6X-series LED backlight conversion kit howtos

You should have 15 roughly evenly spaced brightness levels. AC vs battery should make no discernible difference (regulation is better than .5% across all use cases) I get 5 steps, sometimes 6 steps and once I counted 7 steps - in bios. Same thing under an OS, counted during this: xbacklight -set 0%...

Re: X6X-series LED backlight conversion kit howtos

How do you measure the dimming range with a Spyder3 and dispcalGUI? I use an old version: 1.7.1.6 There is a quick report option under tools. Takes maybe 1 1/2 minutes for a reading. I use the same version. Under 'Tools' I see the following, which is it? Report on uncalibrated display device Report...

Re: X6X-series LED backlight conversion kit howtos

Just installed the board xiphmont mailed me into an x61s. This was my first time doing any type of screen modification. It was very easy to install into my Samsung LTN121XJ-L07. Before led the display was 139 nits; with led it is 303 nits. Here is a visual comparison vs a stock x61 and vs an x220: h...

Re: Intel 320 SSD or something else reliable for X201

I'll eat my words here and recommend the used 160gb 320. I got an Intel X25-V in the mail yesterday. It's s.m.a.r.t. data says it's been on for 2.75 years, hasn't reported any errors. Read speeds are 280MB/s, writes ~50MB/s and latency 0.07ms. 240GB is the barest of minimums nowadays. Maybe in the l...

Re: Intel 320 SSD or something else reliable for X201

Would like an SSD for a recent X201 purchase. Looking for tried & tested rather than the latest & greatest, and prefer the drive has the power safe capacitors as I will using it mostly on the road w/ the battery only. This led me to the trusty Intel 320, which I thought would be a good match for th...

Re: What was the last ThinkPad to have a proper RS232 / serial port?

T61's are pretty big for a shelf. As the OP only need to ssh to the machine, he can get something without a screen, or with a 'needs to be reballed' gpu. I'd go with a T41, shot screen (15 GBP), and a port replicator (13 GBP). Would either add an small ssd or install debian to a usb drive. Cheap, pl...

Nobody has been wondering? They were likely updating their site and accidently broke the links you were trying to use. It took them some time to realize the links were broken, and then to fix them. Often businesses don't know they, or their website company, has broken the site. Best to give them a ...

I unscrewed the three screws which hold the plastic frame in front of the display.
Detached the plastic frame from in front of the screen.
Tapped on the inverter with my finger.
Touched the lcd cable with my finger.

The distortion disappeared!
Problem 'fixed'.

I'd take one, too. IF the DFX files are available I could get them produced locally. The big component manufacturer in town told me for boards they usually do an Initial run of 200, to control the manufacturing process is running correctly. Then minimum run is between 2000-5000 depending on the part...

It would be great if you take pictures of the modifications you've made. Re: TP X61s - what is that rectangular foot near the HDD cover?

Sure, it the machine's flat on a table, with all 4 feet touching the 'floor', the 5th foot isn't supporting diddly-squat - it's just a useless appendage much like the extra set of wheels on (some) dump trucks. But the x61s isn't always laying flat on tables. For example, lay the machine on a book, o...

So the mystery deepens: why is that foot in one place on the X61s and in another place on the X61 - and what is it doing there in the first place?? Open the hdd door and notice the foot perfectly aligns with the frame's internal bracing. The 'mystery' foot adds support to a weak segment of the fram...

The southbridge gets hot in the x61s. Consider adding a heat sink to it.

If you get the Crystal HD working in Linux please share how you did it.
I spent an hour and couldn't get it working in xubuntu 14.04.
