Re: Thinkcentre M52 (8212) accessory question
One of the two sides doesn't have a vent on it, opposite from the end of the case with the PSU exhaust fan, so I'm guessing the no-vent side is supposed to be the "down" side in a vertical configuration, making ventilation a non-issue as far as that goes. Might try to rig up spacers anyway, as the c...

Thinkcentre M52 (8212) accessory question
Recently acquired a refurbished M52 for parental unit use as e-mail/word processing machine, and ran into a problem. The machine it's replacing was a tower design in a cabinet under the desk, but the M52 is in the desktop format. Looking around for the official stand (part # 39M0589) on Google, almo...

Re: R51 processor question
The info is appreciated, but I have little ambition to put much more money into this laptop save perhaps a new battery at some point in the near future, as it only gets used on the relatively rare times that I'm out on the road.

Re: Finally: they got Osama Bin Laden!
Considering how 9/11 and onwards has attracted conspiracy theories, why is one more surprising? :P Personally, while I'm certainly not dismayed that he's going to find out about those 72 Virginians , I think cheering is premature. aQ isn't really a top-down organization. Re: Royal Wedding
I didn't watch it, as I had better things to do at that time in the morning (it was like oh-dark-thirty in the US). I did hear, though, that some anarchist group or other was threatening to disrupt the ceremony, until the London police pulled them aside and pointed out that there'd be like half a mi...

Re: R51 processor question
Just a follow-up, for anyone who cares. (*sound of crickets*) The processor from jronald came in a few days ago, and is now up and running in my laptop (fortunately I had a tube of thermal paste already available, from a previous project, so there was no delay in schlepping out to Rat Shack or whate...

Re: R51 processor question
I knew about CPU-Z, just didn't remember it, since it's been ages since I've concerned myself with benchmarking and exact hardware configurations. Thanks for the reminder. [edit] And it says I have a 705 Banias , BTW. The only two entries on eBay for that model are 1.5 and 1.6, neither of which is w...

Re: R51 processor question
I didn't think there'd really be that much of an improvement with upgunning only the CPU, at least not at a bang/buck ratio that I would find appealing. With a quick glance at eBay, earlier, going up beyond 745 that ratio takes a serious nosedive on a laptop for which I've already spent significantl...

R51 processor question
This is purely for the sake of sh*ts and grins, without concerns for anything like the practicality of the thing. If I were to want to up-gun the processor for the laptop mentioned in my sig, would any of the Pentium M line work, only certain models of CPU, or would this hypothetical me be out of lu...

Here is the BBC's take on their outage. The site only crashed for an hour.
Really, "DON'T PANIC" should be put in larger letters at the top of every browser window, even those set for full screen, maybe sharing space with a reminder about Hanlon's Razor.

The R51 uses PC2700 memory (as ATPO notes), though I don't know if it can handle faster without breaking things.

WTB: R51-1830BTU memory
I'm looking for a 1GB module for my R51, and was hoping I could do better than the 40-50 bucks (not including shipping charges, if any) that I've seen while surfing around the web.
If anyone has a SODIMM they don't need, please drop me a line.
Thanks in advance.

Re: R51 internet connection issue
Ok, put the old HDD back in to try it, and it won't connect, while it will connect with the factory install from R&R. As I now know it's not a hardware problem, though, I'm just going to let that particular sleeping dog lay (lie? I can never remember).

Re: Combining recovery CDs onto 1 DVD
It looks like R&R uses INI files, actually. Each \Recovery\ directory on each disc contains recovery.ini, with the following content: [SETTINGS] OS=XPPRO DBCSSupport=0 KoreanNLS=0 disk= [disk number] [Disks] Disk1=XPPRO Disk2=XPPRO Disk3=XPPRO Disk4=XPPRO Disk5=XPPRO Disk6=XPPRO Disk7=XPPRO I may tr...

Re: R51 internet connection issue
Argh, I'm an idiot. :( After R&Ring onto a new HDD, I find out that it was apparently the router's DMZ setting that was the problem. Disabling that (why I had it on in the first place I have no idea, other than trying to troubleshoot some connection issue in the past) and restarting the router clear...

Re: Combining recovery CDs onto 1 DVD
Eh, I decided I wasn't that enthusiastic about playing with the options for a DVD copy, and just sucked up my dislike of disc swapping. (Not having handy DVDRWs helped with that decision.
)
Finishing off R&R on the new drive now.

Re: Combining recovery CDs onto 1 DVD
Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. The R&R boot disc wasn't what I was looking to put on the DVD, just the 7 CD set for the rest of the stuff. For my R51, there's a total of 8 discs: the bootable CD with R&R itself, and 7 CDs of the actual contents of a factory-fresh HDD ready for going out on the m...

Combining recovery CDs onto 1 DVD
I purchased, earlier this week, a set of recovery discs for my R51-1830BTU, and was wondering if there was a way of combining the 7 non-startup CDs onto one DVD-R. I tried a straight copy of the discs into one HDD folder with the intention of burning that folder onto a DVD, but a lot of the files ha...

Re: R51 internet connection issue
I forgot to mention I also tried pinging several websites from a command prompt. It looked up the IPs fine, but the packets all timed out.
Anyway, just for giggles and grins, I did try the winsock fix thing, to no effect. Still won't surf.

Ok, I opened up the box, and while I wasn't faced with Pandora's problem (Greek mythology, obviously, not the space smurfs :P ), I didn't see anything wrong in there, either. Re: R51 internet connection issue
Windows firewall is one of the first things I disable when setting up a new (-to-me or otherwise) computer. It's more of a hassle than it's worth, for me (who knows not to click strange attachments, and has a much more capable router hardware firewall). As for opening the case, that'll have to wait ...

Type 1830-BTU S/N 99-AAF60 No extra memory installed (which I may address later at some point, if the 7200 rpm HDD I ordered doesn't sufficiently speed things up; 512MB is kinda cruddy for XP, but I'm not looking to use it for anything requiring a lot of firepower, either, and my wallet can temper l...

I've pretty much reached the limit on trying to salvage a working internet connection for the current install on my new-to-me R51, but when I bought the machine it didn't come with recovery discs, nor is there a recovery partition on the HDD. Being a cheapsk ^H^H^H^H^H^H^H frugal shopper, I'm not ke...

Re: R51 internet connection issue
So far, no luck with various attempts at getting things running. It's looking like I may have to kiss off the extra software and wipe it down to bare metal, so to speak. The recovery partition that was supposed to be on the drive... isn't, so it's either futz around with installing an OEM copy of XP...
