Re: Cannot do clean OS install on T61p

Check the fan, and clean out any dust in the fan and heat sinks. The heatsink won't cool if the fins are clogged with dust. You may also have bad heat conductivity to the heat sink. You may have to remove the heatsink from the CPU, clean off the old thermal paste, put new thermal past on, and reinst...

Re: RAM upgrade options for t60 & t61p windows 7 64 bit with SSD

I would forget the T60 and concentrate on the T61, primarily because of the 3GB RAM limitation on the T60. But putting 8GB on the T61 is not inexpensive, those 4GB modules are rather expensive (I know because I have 8GB in my T61). And it is still slower RAM than the RAM in the current laptops. Did ...

Geee
And here I was satisfied with my upgraded G40.
Now a G50 is waved in front of my nose :(

If I upgrade anything it should be the CPU in the T61, and leave the G series alone.

which AntiVirus sw for T23?

I just dumped Norton and Constant Guard off my T23, they were just pigging down the old computer to the point of almost being useless.
Are there any decent AV sw that won't pig down an old computer like the T23?

I am loading MS Security Essentials as a stop gap.

thanks

Hi Medessec
Win7 shows it as T7700 @ 2.4GHz

Unlike the G40 w the Celeron CPU, the T61 seems OK to me so I never bothered looking into a CPU upgrade. But now you guys have me thinking.

Re: T61 hotter after win 7

My T61 with Win7 at idle (Win Task Manager showing 0% CPU) is cycling between 50-55C I have TPFC.62 running in smart mode. It is configured for the fan to turn on at 55C and turn off at 50C. I never had anything but Win7 on mine, so I have no temp reference for XP. However as has been mentioned, I s...

Re: worth putting Win8 on T61?

I was Just thinking if Win8 was worth it or even possible. Having learned with my G40 and my desktop (that I can't take beyond XP due to lack of drivers), if the hardware won't go (no Win8 drivers) then the upgrade to Win8 is dead before it started. So far I'm happy with Win7 on the T61. I'm still e...

Re: worth putting Win8 on T61?

Yup, I've been reading the Win8 section. I was worried if the T61 could not run Win8, similar to the situation where my G40 can't run Win7. So the hardware is not an issue, that is a relief. I can't say if I like the Metro interface or not. I've only played with it for a few minutes in the stores. B...

Is there any advantage to putting Win8 on a T61?
Or is the T61 too old?
I have Win7 on my T61 and am happy with it. But not having use a Win8 machine I don't know what new features it brings to the table that will work on a T61.

Re: G40, any good?

ruixue You need MORE than 256MB of RAM for XP. My Dell laptop was a slug with 384MB and almost unusable. IMHO the bare minimum for XP is 512MB, adequate is 1GB, better 2GB. Running XP with less than 1GB of RAM was an exercise in frustration. I had to delete a bunch of resident programs and change an...

Re: G40, any good?

Part of the reason for limiting my $ spend on the G40, is the computer itself is limited anyway. No video drivers for Win7 and max RAM = 2GB, so the G40 is stuck at XP. I felt that the $75-100 cost of the 3.0GHz CPU and $25-50 cost of the heatsink vs $15 for the 2.8GHz CPU was not worth the small 7%...

Re: wide screen or standard? and other questions

I have the widescreen 15" and have mixed feelings. For use, the extra width is GREAT For travel, the extra width = more bulk and weight = not so good (compared to a traditional format like my 14" T23) IMHO it all depends on how much you will be carrying it. If you will be carrying it a LOT, then the...

Re: Windows XP

It Depends...on a bunch of stuff. 2 major variables are: - How much RAM you have. I have an old Dell laptop that was almost useless with 384MB of RAM. Not enough RAM and the computer has to use the page file and swap memory...which is SLOW. IMHO XP is not usable with less than 512MB of RAM. The less...

George,
I've used Linux on an old comparatively slow Dell laptop w only 256MB of RAM, so I have no doubt you are correct. It would fly on a maxed out G41.

hmmmm, maybe that is what I will do with one of my old laptops...load Linux on it and play with it. Now to figure out which Linux to use.

You are BAD.
Now that I have my G40 upgraded, I keep coming back to this thread and thinking, hmmm.....a maxed up G41 would be cool to have. You are right, the G40/41 have a certain look that the newer laptops don't have.

But it is still limited by old hardware to XP...DRAT.

If if is going to be a computer that is used heavily and it isn't going anyplace, why not a desktop PC?
In my mind most laptops are a compromise for portability, and you pay a premium for that. If you get a desktop/mini-tower you get the power at a lower price.

Re: G40, any good?

I installed SpeedFan
I get a temp of 55C, and it changes, so it is able to read the temp of the CPU.
But speedfan can't find the fan controller to control the fan, so I'll have to rely on the BIOS/OS control of the fan.

Re: G40, any good?

Very oddly, now TPFC does not work.
w the Celeron, I was not able to manually control the fan, but I could read the CPU temp.
Now the CPU temp is not valid, it reads 42c with and w/o the fan running. So it is getting a false signal or not reading the CPU correctly.

TPFanControl on G40

I installed TPFC on my G40, and the temp sensor does not change, it reads 42C. But I can feel that the fan is on and off, so something is triggering the fan.

Is there another sw that will read the temp sensors so I can double check that 42C.
