Re: W520 & RAID option - some questions
If it'll only work on Intel ssds then its not something to write home about. Some drives do have hardware garbage collection, but not all ssds. As for no trim no big deal, I can attest that trim is vital. My X301 has an older ssd with no trim. It went from 160mb r/w to 90mb r, 20mb w, in less then 6...

Re: W520 & SSD SATA III
I was originally going to put an Intel 320 80GB mSATA card in and keep the 500gb spinning disk, but I decided to just make things simple and just replace the spinning disk (to be used as an UltraBay backup drive) with the M4 512GB. Cost isn't a concern right now... If cost if no option you should s...

Re: W520 & RAID option - some questions
The only benefit of RAID is you can get cheap 1TB of RAID 0 giving you about 160mb read and write. If you try to run SSD RAID, you'll run into the problem of TRIM support. Win 7 won't do TRIM on RAID. So you'll start off at 800mb read/write and quickly drop down to half of that in a few months of us...

Re: W520 requires 170W AC adapter
A maxed out W520 running everything from Extreme Quad, 2000m, msata SSD, RAID 0 HDD, 32gb ram will need 170w guaranteed. Extreme Quad 55w, Quadro 2000m 45w = 100w + LED, mobo, msata, two HDDs and 32gb of Ram = 160w easy. You build a AC for worst case scenario, very few W520 owners will ever see the ...

Re: Incompatibility by design: 170W vs 135W vs 90W. Why?
Yes, you can shim the connector. I've done it myself. Works perfect. The Series 3 Plus docks all have the same board, only difference is the connector. This is done as a cheap way to force W510 owners to buy new Docks. For a 5 cent connector change, Lenovo makes 250 bucks. All you need a fine razor,...
